|
|
I have the following installation (fresh one)
Gentoo x86 - P4 Celeron, Kernel 2.6.17-gentoo-r4, Mythtv 0.19, ivtv 0.7.0, 2 PVR-500 cards
I am unable to change channels from within Mythtv.
ivtv-tune works fine:
# ivtv-tune -d/dev/video0 -teurope-west -cE5
/dev/video0: 175,250MHz (Signal Detected)
When I start mythtv it stays on that same channel no matter what I do. |

I found a work-around.
I made a script to use ivtv-tune with the mythtv "External channel change command".
I found out that ivtv-tune doesn't accept all the channel numbers. I set frequencies in the database.
The script is:
#!/bin/bash
echo "Changing $1 to frequency $2" >> /var/log/mythtv/channel.log
ivtv-tune -d$1 -teurope-west -f$2 >> /var/log/mythtv/channel.log
In the mythtv-setup Input connection screen "External channel change command" type "yourscript /dev/video0" (or video1 if you have 2 cards).
you could off course just place "ivtv-tune -d/dev/video0 -teurope-west -f" into the command field, but I wanted to add some log info.
As I didn't gat alot of response here I will repost the problem on the mythtv-users mailing list.
Once solved I will post the solution here but if anyone has any ideas they can still let us know. |

| I have having exactly the same problem. I'll try your script solution and see if it works. Does this work with recordings as well as wit live tv? |

After reinstalling my system even the work around doesn't work for livetv anymore.
Regarding the recordings itself I don't have the problem anymore. It correctly records the scheduled recordings.
If you enable extensive logging you can see that when you start livetv and switch channels there is a MYSQL query that responds with an empty result.
I looked at the query itself and it requests a channel number from chanid=Null (if I remember well).
I posted a bug but nobody's looking at it . https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=146995
At least I'm now sure i'm not the only one having the problem.
A friend of mine did the same setup on a Debian machine and he doesn't have the problem. I'm convinced this is a "gentoo only" problem.
Anyway the recordings are O.K. and my system has been running stable for 2 weeks now.
I've installed a frontend-only machine placed under my TV. It runs like a charm, even while the mythbackend is recording 3 channels at the same time!
I sometimes have some issues with the belgian (BE-dutch) EPG, but I solved that by taking the Dutch (NL) epg's for the most important channels. |

I have a pvr500 and an hd-5500, and I can't change the channel on either of them, and the script didn't seem to work either.
In addition, for some reason all of my program information is off by one channel (i.e. what is really on channel 39 is listed as being on channel 40). I don't know if this is related or not. |

| I think I am going to try installing Knoppmyth (probably on another drive, so I don't lose all the work I put in so far), and see if I can get that working, though I would prefer to stay with Gentoo if possible. |

Hey folks.
You need to setup your channels frequencies to be able to change your channels.
You can do that quite easily within mythtv-setup, 5th menu (channels setup). There's a tool there to scan for channels.
Otherwise MythTV won't know on which frequency to hop when switching channels..[/i]
Remember the good ol'time when channels had to be setup manually per channels in the database _________________ Foo. |

I fixed my incorrect channels problem. Turns out that I need to "retrieve channel lineups" after doing the channel scan on the "video sources" setup. Previously I had just scanned the channels and I guess that it didn't match them correctly.
In regards to KaZeR's post, I have deleted and re scanned the channels numerous times, and it still won't let me change channels in the frontend. I can tell mythtv-setup to start on a particular channel, and when I load the frontend, it works fine, so I imagine that the frequencies are set up. |

If your channels are setup correctly, please check your mythbackend logs for errors when changing channels. It's probably easiest to check the logs if you stop the mythbackend service, clear the log, and then start it again- then start mythfrontend go straight to live tv, try and change channels a few times, and then exit. The backend log should be reporting that the channel changes are failing for a particular reason. |

Where are the logs stored? (or whats the best way to look at them?) I've been meaning to go poke around inside the database but haven't had time.
I was tinkering around with settings last night, and found that I can change the channel from the Program Guide, and I can even change the channel by typing in the channel number, but I still can't change the channel using the up and down arrow keys. If I can figure out how to bring up the program guide while watching live TV (I'm sure it's just a keystroke that I haven't stumbled on yet), then that should be good enough for me. |

If you can change channels elsewhere in the frontend, chances are it's not a backend issue. There can be more than one cause of channels not changing. Check keys.txt for a rundown of which keys do what, that should help. On my system: 'zcat /usr/share/doc/mythtv-0.20_p11444-r1/keys.txt.gz | less' does the trick, or you can look at the svn repository for the current version: http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/browser/trunk/mythtv/keys.txt
If you were having trouble changing to a different channel no matter what method you used, then I'd say check the backend log. Usually it's located at /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log, but it is configurable. The vast majority of errors show up with the default level of logging. |
