Hello you all,
first I have to tell you that I'm German and my English is not very good.
But I hope you can understand me.
So now, thats my problem:
I've installed Gentoo on Friday on my new computer. (I've listed my Hardware at the end of this post.)
The Install works fine without any bigger problems.
But now I wanted to install 'xorg-x11'.
But it brokes with this lines:
| Code: |
!!! ERROR: x11-libs/libX11-1.0.1-r1 failed.
Call stack:
ebuild.sh, line 1539: Called dyn_compile
ebuild.sh, line 939: Called src_compile
ebuild.sh, line 1248: Called x-modular_src_compile
x-modular.eclass, line 330: Called x-modular_src_make
x-modular.eclass, line 325: Called die
!!! emake failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.
|
Ok, thats my errror message.
I found this problem often in the forums and also in google. But I never found a thread where I understood how to solv that problem. That may cause by my bad english.
Could you tell me how I can solv this problem?
The other problem is that I'm a noob.
My Hardware:
- Cpu: Amd Athlon X2 4600+
- Board: Asus M2N32-Sli Deluxe
- Graphic Card: Asus Geforce 7600GT
If you need more information tell me!
It would be nice of you if you could help me.
Cu.

No, it's not. The error is somewhere above what you posted. |

Kopernikus,
We need the command and the error message that resulted from the very first error in the package.
All the other messages are emerge 'tidying up' to exit cleanly.
You can scroll the console screen with Shift+PageUp.
If you emerge gpm you can have copy and paste in the console too, so you need not copy type.
If the first error is too far back, then you will need to set up logging in /etc/make.conf.
The file /etc/make.conf.example shows how. _________________ Regards,

Having got that far, I don't know what the fix is. The good news is that you will not be alone with this error.
Try searching bugs.gentoo.org. It may already be reported and the fix posted there. _________________ Regards,

Ok, I searched at bugs.gentoo.org and found someone who has the same problem as me.
But I didn't found a solution for my problem.
The bug I found is from 06.07.2006.
What should I do?
Will new installing gentoo help?
Why is this packet marked stable when it isn't stable?
I don't know what to do.
Everytime problems.

Kopernikus,
Reinstalling won't fix it - something is broken somewhere and needs to be fixed.
Can you post the bug number please - I can't find anything useful. _________________ Regards,

Kopernikus,
Thats is not a related error.
Try posting a new bug. The developers will reply to you when the bug is classified.
You could try the testing version to see if that has the same problem. If you wish to do that, unmak it by adding
| Code: | | x11-libs/libX11 ~amd64 | to the file /etc/portage/package.keywords. The file will not exist until you create it.
Its possible that this testing package will wan other testing packages too.
Portage will tell you about that when you try to emerge _________________ Regards,

Ok, I tested it with the masked libX11.
But it also didn't work.
I'm totaly despaired now.
I don't ´know what I should do.
Is it a error in portage, or is it beacause of my system.
How to create a bug report.
I don't know what to tell them!
I never created a bug report.
Sorry, but I'm a bit angry to Gentoo. I think that isn't a fail of mine.
Help me.
regards,
Kopernikus

Dont be angry, you are probably right that it's not your fault but wait to see. Gentoo is powerful and flexible but this brings up problems you dont get on other distros that limit your choice and give you one choice : 32 bit or 64 bit precompiled with a set target.
you have pretty cutting edge hardware and you have chosen a distro that compiles everything specifically optimised for it so you may bring out some problems that have no had much attention yet.
also modular xorg is fairly new. I feel it's being pushed too soon by the devs. You could try masking the more recent ones and installing the more standard xorg.
I have locked mine like this:
| Code: | | echo '>x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7' >> /etc/portage/package.mask |
That may get you a working X11 a bit sooner if you dont get a quick reply on the bug.

Ok.
Now I install xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7.
First I had to unmerge all that 'lib' shit, because it was troubling with xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7.
I hope the installation works now.
When the problem with this libx11 package is solved I will reinstall my system and start completly new.
@Gentree:
Did I understand you right?:
Because of my (new) Hardware I'm a tester?

since all software has bugs we are all testers to some degree.
M$ make you pay for support even if it's their buggy software, other distros take months or expect you to get into IRC channels and become a dev. I think you'll find better support here than anywhere else.
my point is you have hardware that is not very wide spread yet and you chose a distro that trys to get the most out of the hardware at the expence of simplicity. This means more choice , more permutations and hence less testing of each possible combination.
So your choice may give you some issues to iron out. That seems to be well within your capacities.
this package was marked stable on amd64 on 30.06.06 , it may be that this was a bit premature if this bug is comfirmed.
You could try suse, since you have fast hardware you wont realise how slow it is
Gentoo is not the easiest distro to install and maintain but I like it.
In case you have not seen it there is a specific forum for AMD64 Gentoo that may help you with problems like this. There is a specific call for users to indicate where development effort needs to be focused.

Kopernikus,
Don't dispair and don't be angry at Gentoo.
I can tell from your posts that the problem is not something you have done or not done.
Its either something with the source code, or less likley, the ebuild. Therefore the fix is either with the Xorg developers or the Gentoo developers.
Until its fixed, all you can do is try different versions, I suggested a later one, Gentree the earlier one.
In your bug report, you should post a description of the problem, youroutput and the compile output showing the fault. This will allow a developer to try to reproduce it under the same conditions as you encountered it. _________________ Regards,

Hello all,
I've installed xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7 now and it worked without any problems.
Now I'm installing firefox, xfce4 and all the other things I need.
Thanks to you Gentree for the tip with the older version. And thanks that you explained me how I can install an older Version of a package. That helps me to learn more about gentoo, I think.
I think you all didn't understand me right. I don't want to leave gentoo. I tested with Suse and all this other stuff 3 years ago. And I can confirm that Suse is the slowest of all distris.
I'm using gentoo more than 1 1/2 Years now and I now its advantages! No I don't want to leave gentoo!
But I simply don't understand one thing: Why do the devs mark that version of the package 'libx11' as stable when it isn't stable.?
@NeddySeagoon:
Äh. Could you please check my bug message and tell me whats wrong and what I should do better?
You are the one who speaks the better english. That would be very nice of you!
Here's again the bug number: 143952
So thanks for all the help and support you gave me at this point!
Cu.

Kopernikus,
The devs cannot test under all circumstamces. Things qualifiy for being marked satble when there are no open bugs and no bug reports for 30 days. Thats a 'rule of thumb' - just a guide.
Oh, there is a saying about software ... there is always one more bug, so stable does not mean bug free, just no known bugs, which is not th same thing at all.
I'll look at your bug and post a comment to if its needed, my English my be better than yours but your English is plenty good enough.
Hmm - I am not permitted to see your bug. _________________ Regards,

yes I saw that earlier, my guess is he checked the "Gentoo Developers" box thinking this was needed. Not noticing the bit that said:
Leave all boxes unchecked to make this a public bug
I imagine they will take the restriction off once it gets read.
