Go to www.java.com and do a manual download of the 32-bit Linux self-extracting file. Follow the instructions for installation. Then you'll need to symlink /opt/java32/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so to your ~/.mozilla/plugins/ directory.

As a side benefit, openoffice-bin also works nicely with this java runtime.

The Gentoo solution is the app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-java package, but as you noticed, it's not as good as using Sun Java 1.5. After Sun open-sources Java in the next few months, maybe Sun 1.5 (or 1.6 by then) will be used for emul-linux, but if you want it now this is how you have to get it.
