I want to connect my notebook to my digital reciever through an optical cable (with the potential to get 5.1 surrond sound). Any recommendations in a USB or PCMCIA device (preferably USB) that will work in Linux/Windows?

So far the only thing I've found is couple of devices from Creative. But I'm not sure if I need something as complicated as that, plus it doesn't seem like stores carry it here (Canada). Any recommendations?

Check if your notebook has a chinch output for video/spdif. It would be the cheapest version to buy a transcoder from electrical spdif to optical spdif.

I did never use one of those, but I think the userbase of creative external solutions is big enough to have pretty well supported hardware.
