Can I safely do this?

Problem is:
$ du -h /var/tmp/portage

I've been looking at the /var/tmp/portage files, mainly to better understand the portage system. They appear to be logs of past emerges. I can't imagine any use they would serve, especially logs from emerges of removed or prior versions of stuff. And for some reason there are a lot of 0-byte files, which I've already deleted - even 0-byte files take up space somewhere.

[Edit] - oops, I was thinking '/var/log/portage' when you were asking about '/var/tmp/portage'. AFAIK '/var/tmp/portage' can be 86'd with no ill effects.

From the fine faq:

Quote:
During compilation, Gentoo saves the sources of the package in /var/tmp/portage. These files and folder are usually deleted upon a successful merge, but this sometimes fails. It is safe to clean out all contents of this directory if emerge is not running. Just to be sure, always pgrep emerge before cleaning out this directory.

If you want some field data, I can attest to having deleted it a few times myself, without having run into any problems whatsoever.

HTH.
