Been reading about raid1, and have found that write performance is about the same as if only one drive was being used... makes sense, data has to be mirrored to N drives.

But for read speed, a raid1 array also has the same read speed as if only one drive was being used. Why is that? Wouldn't it be better to split up the reading of the data across N mirrored drives?

Software raid 1 won´t improve while reading. At least not much.

But some Hardware Raid Controllers are able to read from multiple raid 1 disks to gain speed.
