Dear Friends:
Ok, I've migrated from devfs to udev on 12 differente machines painlessly, but one is giving me a huge headache. I've went through the forums and the wiki for a solution but everything I've try simply does not work.
Scenario: migrating a devfs 2.6.11 kernel to a 2.6.15 udev kernel. The original 2.6.11 works gracefully. The 2.6.15 stops with:
Code: |
* Mounting /dev for udev [ ok ]
* Seeding /dev with needed nodes [ ok ]
* Setting up proper hotplug agent [ ok ]
* Using netlink for hotplug agent [ ok ]
* Starting udevd
|
Note that there is no "[ ok ]" after "Starting udevd", meaning that it hangs forever...
If I press CTRL-C, the boot continues, but none of my partitions or devices seem to be mounted / recognized. The boot stops at some random point, not allowing me to login.
It seems to me some of that tiny little stupid things we do, but I am absolutelly unable to figure out
Thanks in advance, Cantão! |

What versions of udev? Have you tried an older, stable version? |

I'm on x86 (stable), so I'm with udev-079-r1. All my other machines are running the same version of udev flawlessly... Do you think downgrading to, let's say 059, might be of any help?
I tried to enable logging by setting udev_log="yes" on /etc/udev/udev.conf, but nothing appeared on /var/log/messages.
Thanks a lot, Cantão! |

Ok, mission status:
1. Upgraded to 086 --> nothing changed
2. Double-re-checked kernel config --> nothing changed
3. Rebooted and gave root password for maintenance. /dev almost empty. Run udevstart. /dev populated.
4. Right after (3), change RC_DEVICE_TARBALL in /etc/conf.d/rc to "yes".
5. Reboot --> freezes at Starting udevd again
6. CTRL-C this time finishes the boot. System working aparently fine.
7. Reboot again --> Failure...
Argh!  |

Hi,
have you resolved your problems? And how did you?
I have a similar problem on a PIII running 2006.0 with 2.6.15 gentoo-sources.
It worked fine until yesterday. I rebooted and it hangs while starting udev.
CTRL-C just gives me a login screen where I can't log in (since nothing has been started up).
In my case the whole startup process is extremely slow after 'INIT: version 2.86 booting' was printed.
I'm using reiserfs for / (including /boot).
Thanks for any advice.
