Various HP notebook models (nx7400, nc6320, nx9420) suffer from the "bad state" ACPI bug.
It causes BIOS to take up to 30s for booting (until grub is displayed) and occures when the kernel halts the system with psmouse still loaded.

Workaround:
  • Compile psmouse (CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2, Device Drivers > Input device support > Mouse > PS/2 mouse) as a module (you will need it for internal touchpad)
  • Add psmouse to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
  • Add following line to /etc/conf.d/local.stop
    Code:
    rmmod psmouse

  • If your notebook is already in the bad state turn it off, unplug AC adapter AND remove the battery for a moment.

Add-on: The "bad state" also causes battery status not to update.
