I updated to suspend2-sources 2.6.17-r2 and all glitches are gone. I guess they fixed the SATA driver in 2.6.17. I love linux. Now I can impress people again by recompiling the system while watching TV, burning DVDs and have hundreds of web paging open with the system still being more responsive than W***s. MUAH!

I'm on 2.6.17.7 vanilla and 2.6.17-r4 gentoo but it's not been my solution

Yup, I'm also on 2.6.17-gentoo-r4.

If I watch a movie while rtorrent is hash-checking some torrents (A LOT of I/O, while only using ~10% CPU) the movie starts to lag/chop..
This did NOT happen with my old setup (Pentium 4 2.4 / 1GB ram / ancient ide hard drive) compared to my new (Pentium D 950 / 2GB ram / s-ata),

Gah..

For great justice, my dmesg and .config

Any thoughts?
Maybe I should make another tread since my problem isn't 64bit specific..

Mmmh, seems I celebrated too early. the glitches appearantly disappeared for a short time, but when I did an emerge -uD world I noticed it. But it improved a bit, KWIN doesn't crash any more under load. Ok, I take it back, the problem is not yet solved. Someone fix the SATA drivers!!

Maybe this page can be of interest? I'm using JMicron 20360/20363 AHCI controller for a sataII disk and have no problems, the performance is as one can expect. The kernel in use is ck-sources-2.6.17_p1-r2 with CFQ scheduler.

Don't know if this is also a "me too", but I'm experiencing the same symptoms on a pxe-boot system.
So, file system is nfs. When unpacking or copying large files the system freezes for several seconds (while nfs is dumping the data onto the server's hdd), then starts working fine again, then gets unresponsive again while nfs is working.
Thought this was a nfs-only problem, but anyway: this should be the server's problem. Can't see a reason while the client freezes. Maybe this is somewhat related to your problems?

I'm on the latest git (2.6.18-rc3-git1) now and shit still lags too much when there's disk I/O

Hey people.

I hope nobody minds, I have taken the liberty to post a mail to the linux kernel mailing list (with a link to this thread included). For those interested, I chose "sluggish system responsiveness under higher IO load" as subject, so you can easily look it up on the common archives.

Have a nice weekend,
matthew.

While I don't have SATA drives, I've experienced occasional I/O slowdowns on my 3800+ X2 and NV4 motherboard when heavily loaded. I've been MUCH happier having turned off all PREEMPT kernel options. Now I can load the machine down and every job continues to make progress in a what I consider a fair manner.

I have this same problem, on similar hardware (athlon64 3500+ MSI K8N NEO4, NVIDIA SATA). I've noticed these slowdowns during heavy disk i/o involving the swap file(s). This is especially frustrating since I have 4 swap files on 4 seperate SATA disks, all given equal priority. This machine should be flying, yet running vmware is painful since it will slow everything to a crawl during launch and shutdown of the guest-os. There are no hardware bottlenecks on this system, I have plenty of excess capacity; this has to be a software/kernel problem.

I'll try re-compiling the kernel without any pre-emption, as suggested above.

I have this issue too on my Athlon64 X2 3800+, Asus A8N-E machine with SATA HD. The time it's most apparent is when unpacking files when emerging as someone said, the machine pretty much just stops for that period.

Well, disabling pre-emption completely brought some definite improvement on my rig. It's pretty smooth going now, even under very heavy load.

Just a quick thought here, people seem to be blaming the SATA drivers, but might it not have to do with RAID. I don't know if you guys are running any fake raid using dmraid, but I started experiencing this problem once I started using my onboard VIA raid.

I use no raid anywhere and no SATA drivers here - pretty basic setup.

I'm on SATA but not RAID here (hmm, come to think of it, back when I was using RAID I think it was fine, heh). Has anyone tried using an older kernel like 2.6.12 or something incase it was something brought in via the kernel? (I would but I'm away from home, compiled a new kernel (.18) and the machine didn't come back up after reboot :( ).

I have this problem too, I disabled preemption and it improves a bit, but there's still some lag

Well i have and had the Problems too, but I think it is normal, because under Windows I have the same problems. I discovered it under heavy load watching DVB-T TV.

But it's PATA and even worse under windows x64 edition / vista rc1.

This problem seems to have gone away for me after upgrading to 2.6.18, which features a huge SATA update including, amoung other things, NCQ support for nvidia sata controllers.

I have also experienced this problem. However, after installing 2.6.18, disabling preempt alltogether, the system doesn't become unresponsive while the sata drive is working any more.

By any chance, is there someone NOT using the nvidia kernel module that is also experiencing this issue?

I don't have the problem, but I thought I'd post what drkusama was mentioning. Here's the commit (from the 2.6.18 changelog) that looks like it might directly affect this issue...

commit c06aad854fdb9da38fcc22dccfe9d72919453e43
Author: Daniel Kobras <kobras@linux.de>
Date: Sun Aug 27 01:23:24 2006 -0700

[PATCH] dm: Fix deadlock under high i/o load in raid1 setup.

On an nForce4-equipped machine with two SATA disk in raid1 setup using dmraid,
we experienced frequent deadlock of the system under high i/o load. 'cat
/dev/zero > ~/zero' was the most reliable way to reproduce them: Randomly
after a few GB, 'cp' would be left in 'D' state along with kjournald and
kmirrord. The functions cp and kjournald were blocked in did vary, but
kmirrord's wchan always pointed to 'mempool_alloc()'. We've seen this pattern
on 2.6.15 and 2.6.17 kernels. http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/4/20/142 indicates
that this problem has been around even before.

So much for the facts, here's my interpretation: mempool_alloc() first tries
to atomically allocate the requested memory, or falls back to hand out
preallocated chunks from the mempool. If both fail, it puts the calling
process (kmirrord in this case) on a private waitqueue until somebody refills
the pool. Where the only 'somebody' is kmirrord itself, so we have a
deadlock.

I worked around this problem by falling back to a (blocking) kmalloc when
before kmirrord would have ended up on the waitqueue. This defeats part of
the benefits of using the mempool, but at least keeps the system running. And
it could be done with a two-line change. Note that mempool_alloc() clears the
GFP_NOIO flag internally, and only uses it to decide whether to wait or return
an error if immediate allocation fails, so the attached patch doesn't change
behaviour in the non-deadlocking case. Path is against current git
(2.6.18-rc4), but should apply to earlier versions as well. I've tested on
2.6.15, where this patch makes the difference between random lockup and a
stable system.

Hey people.

I hope nobody minds, I have taken the liberty to post a mail to the linux kernel mailing list (with a link to this thread included). For those interested, I chose "sluggish system responsiveness under higher IO load" as subject, so you can easily look it up on the common archives.

Have a nice weekend,

Hi folks ..

same problems on a Shuttle ST20G5 with 1GB-RAM and SATA-HD

.. i run Suse 10.1 on AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ ..
kernel is 2.6.16.21-0.25-smp .. if it is really a kernel/sata issue i am happy to wait for 2.6.18* ..

i already thought about changing my system disk to my internal PATA and use the SATA as less as possible :-) .. but this configuration should kikk a$$ .. but lags to much

Code:
# grep SHARE /boot/config-2.6.16.21-0.25-smp
CONFIG_IDEPCI_SHARE_IRQ=y

Code:
# grep EMPT /boot/config-2.6.16.21-0.25-smp
# CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE is not set
CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y
# CONFIG_PREEMPT is not set
# CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL is not set

any news from the posting-starters ???
