At the risk of sounding like I don't know what I'm doing, what hoops do I need to jump through to get -hashvals and -zdynsort working? There's an overlay I need to get a new ld and glibc, right?

But you obviously could have found that on your own...

Yikes! I don't think he wants to mess around with the new hashstyle stuff yet does he? I think it's still too bleeding edge. Even nesl247 who wrote the guide admits he's not even using it yet.

In my opinion, the best place to get an overlay with hashval and zdynsort LDFLAGS as well as a host of other good tweaks and optimizations is the evolution mission project.

When did I admit I'm not using it, I need to correct that then. Been a user since the patches were released. The newest stuff is pretty stable. You need binutils-2.17.50.0.3 from portage, nxsty's glibc with USE="hashstyle" and prelink from my overlay. Though this should all be integrated soon, if nxsty ever returns my pm.

So would u recommend current users of -Wl,-Bdirect,-Wl,- hasvals,-Wl,-zdynsort to convert over? I've been nxsty's glibc overlay for some time and have been quite happy with it. So I will have to run pre-link in conjunction with the hashstyle to get significant gains? Thx

No I wouldn't advise the migration unless you are very careful in it. You must follow instructions precisely or else your system will not be usable. Especially if a newer patch version comes out.

This line from the gentoo-wiki just above "Post Messages"

Hope this explains it more or less, I haven't tested it myself for now obviously, but it should be correct.

But I misunderstood. Sorry about that. I didn't understand you were just referring to upgrading from an old, patched version rather than referring to the guide as a whole.

It wasn't me that put the upgrade part in. And if it was me who made that statement, I put it in because well I haven't tested it. Otherwise it was basically from the forums whoever had posted the steps. I think Gergan.

well you could remove this line :), but this guide is only for people who update from older hashstyle.
the ones, who upgrade from -Bdirect seems to also have problems, the concept is to ensure that glibc is not using any patches through the migration, well hashvals -bdirect and so on were broken by design, that's why I have never used them, but it seems that they also break the structure of the sections - so beware and always have in mind that things could break, it seems that building glibc in chroot could help in such cases :)
