|
|
I'm starting my first Gentoo installation after using Ubuntu and Debian for about a year. I'm excited about Gentoo--and about taking the next step ...
I have an early Sempron socket 754. I know for a fact that it's not a 64 bit processor. In the Debian world I've always used their "K7" kernels, but there is no such thing in Gentoo. It looks like I have a choice of Athlon or AthlonXP, for the closest processor. Are these the same as K7? What is the difference between Athlon and AthlonXP, and which is the closet thing to my Debian K7?
Thank you. |

When choosing a stage, you'll take an x86 arch, then you have 2 choices: athlon-xp or x86.
I'm no expert at this, I use an amd64, but I'd say use athlon-xp, since the sempron is the successor of the athlon-xp. If you wanna be safer (not that using athlon-xp will damage anything) then just use x86. |

Ok, I'll use Athlon-XP. I remember now that there is also a choice of i686 and i586. Neither of those Intel-optimized kernels were as good as K7 in Debian on my hardware.
I'm sure I'll be back with more questions... Thanks. |
