tools to diagnose hard drives?

i would like to do a diagnostic test on internal and external hard drives - i don't know any apps to do this for external drives at the moment - just bought a western digital drive cheap (40 bucks) and its acting a bit strange etc i want to know if its bad or not - please hlp

hi!

you can also check your harddrives using s.m.a.r.t data - get them with smartmontools (you can install it by simply emerge it).
if you want to check specific harddrives you can use the tools from the manufacturers website.
