I have Gentoo on my Inspiron 6000 and the installation wasn't too bad. I had to play with xorg.conf quite a bit but that was the biggest hassle.
I do know a few people running Gentoo on Thinkpads though and they swear by it: "Best laptop for Gentoo"
Knowing what I know now, I would have rather have bought a Thinkpad but you can't beat the price of a Dell.
Good Luck _________________ http://www.emergelife.com |

Gentoo runs like a champ on my HP dv1000s. The card reader is unsupported and I've never fooled with the BlueTooth, but other than that, it's great. I don't remember any difficulties installing either of them and the widescreen resolution works and looks great. Both of them were > $1000 when I got them, but they may be around that by now. |

HP also makes the dv5000 series (Pavillion) which is pretty good in linux. You have a choice of video cards...I would recommend the nVidia. I have the dv5000t... (nVidia) treated me well thus far. There's even a brief howto on gentoo-wiki.
If you're willing to spend some cash...ASUS has some REALLY nice laptops. The A6Vc is a decent pre-fab. They also have the 'Built-On' line where you can pick custom components. The Z71V (also has an nVidia card) is one I set up for my buddy. I had no problems setting Gentoo up on it...and to my knowledge, my buddy hasn't had any problems since. _________________ -- Coplan

I got a Thinkpad A31 recently from a friend of my dad's whose daughter no longer used it. for FREE!!
I simply love it! i had an iBook G3 previously (before i dropped it ) when i replace this one (which will hopefully last beyond college) i'll definitely be sticking with IBM/Lenovo. and a word on sony: i've never had a very pleasant experience with sony's products... and they love making their own proprietary stuf (blueray and UMD, anyone?) i'd suggest IBM/Lenovo and Toshiba is supposed to be great also _________________ I'm ready to rock out with my Glock out! |

I can attest to the fact that Toshiba's are great. My office has a bunch of them and my step-mother has one as well. I cannot, however, attest to the Linux compatibility.
Toshiba has those HD-DVD drives now. _________________ -- Coplan

I am thinking about getting a laptop to use with linux.
I doubt that i will make it a dual boot with windows so my priority will be linux support.
I will post here details about what i would like to have in it and what specs are my priorities.
Brand: i was thinking about IBM (thinkpad ) i know the many people like HP but IBM seems to please me more.
however i would like to know what is the word out there about the apple mac ones ; or apple intel with linux.
HD: at least 80GB up and i would like it to be 7200 rpms
Ram: capable of 2gb minimum ( it would be nice if it goes up to 4gb but it is not a priority )
Batery: 3h min / ideal 5h
Video card: i don not want it with ATI. nvidia or intel ( i do prefer nvidia but intel is ok too or even others)
256mb at least
Wireless: i prefer builtin but only if its fully supported by linux. Any recommendations on the chip ? intel ? other?
Touchpad: i dont care as long as its fully supported by linux. i still prefer the ps2 mouse
Nic: it would be nice to have a 1GB nic but not a priority
InfraRed: optional if fully supported only. not a priority
Multimedia keys: not needed or wanted
Builtin memory card reader: only if fully suported. optional
cpu: i do not want a celeron. i am looking at something above 2GHZ with 2 cores and it would be nice to be 64bit
cache memory is important for me so i want something with power here.
dvdrom: dvd-rw if possible dual layer. however if the rest of the hardware pleases me 110% i dont even need a builtin dvdrom.
bluetooth: included is not a must. but only if fully suported by linux
builtin camera: i dont care. not needed but if fully supported... sure why not.
usb : the more the merrier
audio: anything good but fully supported. audio is very important to me
My primary interest and use in this laptop is:
To be used with linux : gentoo/pentoo/knoppix/backtrack
to be used mostly in wireless networks .
Multimedia is not a must. Other than audio & video online stream. i will play my music files only plus dvds or divx files.
Gaming: not happening
I am a fluxbox user so .. i am fine with cmd line software.
I also would like to know if any info about custom laptops. Brands, names, sites, anything...
Anything or any place where one could order a custom made laptop.
There are a few other details but i will talk about them later if needed
I hope that in the end i can come up with enough parts to build this laptop and then hopefuly someone out there will sell it to me
if possible post your # lspci and PM me your # lshw
if you guys have laptops with some kind of this hardware fully suported under linux; please let me know the brand and spec details.

madtux.org has an awesome high-performance laptop (I'm using it now, it is beyond awesome). However, it has one major flaw:
The Intel HDA sound card. If you put headphones in, it still plays sound through the speakers. It may annoy other people...
A minor issue is the touchpad. It is longer than normal, and it's dimensions cause the synaptics driver to act strange. One third of the right side of your touchpad will most likely scroll your windows unless you turn off scroll. But I hate touchpads anyway, so the first thing I did was get a mouse.... and since my dad's workplace gives away Microsoft mice for free.... well, they're better than touchpads anyway.
You will need to use the program 915resolution to get your video card working at the right resolution. You will also probably not have a framebuffer unless you use vesa, as the intel framebuffer doesn't seem to work. _________________ I'm too lazy to keep this stupid signature up to date, so here's something more interesting:

Does this work for you?
One more plus about this laptop - you can buy it without a pre-installed OS. No Microsoft tax! _________________ I'm too lazy to keep this stupid signature up to date, so here's something more interesting:

I recently bought a Asus Z53TC-AS009M for 660 EUR (substract the Vista Home License that I will resell):
http://www.yamodo.de/shop/shop.php/sid/x/shp/oxbaseshop/cl/details/cnid/ca345241b43130582.48906524/anid/89745cfab0fb2a5a3.03747701
Its CPU is a bit below your requirements, but pretty much all the hardware works.

You will not be disappointed if you buy a thinkpad. The [T|R|X]61s have been getting great reviews, but I've got a 600e (~1999) that works fine, still a solid, dependable machine. Lots of laptops are cheap pieces of plastic these days, but Lenovo has so far done a great job of keeping up with IBM's reputation for professional-grade. |

Definately get a Thinkpad. My coworker and I both have T60p's, and Linux runs solid, with support for everything.
The ONLY catch is the video card you get. Ours have ATI chipsets, thus we have to run XGL to get beryl working.
I did notice the T61 series have an Nvidia chipset available now, so graphics tweaking should be simpler that what we had to do.
I've run linux on the Dell D600 also, and find the Thinkpad built, linux ready. |

Could you please tell me your laptop battery lifetime when you bought it and after some time (like 1-2 years) ?
I would know more about this before buying a laptop
Thanks a lot

In general, after about 2-3 years, a laptop battery will carry half or less of it's original charge. You should note that this is heavily dependant upon your usage patterns of the battery, though. In contrast, if you store the battery half charged in a cool dry place, it'll probably still retain 95% of it's original charge after 3 years. _________________ Game! - Where the stick is mightier than the sword! |

Hi guys...here I am again with that new Laptop question...Last time around I got an inspiron e1405 and am very happy with it!! but i sold it to my parents and am planning on getting a new dell, and I want a latitude!! I travel a lot with it so I need a small one, 15.4 is the absolute maximum i can afford, and i'm trying to avoid that. By budget tops at about 1,500$
After trying different options at dell's site I filtered it down to 2 choices

The second one is a 12", dell doesn't say anything about it's resolution and it comes with the mother of all evil....windows....but it's perfect for traveling around!! I am still leaning towards the first one though...i am open to any suggestions!! Thanks.
EDIT: I don't really understand what "2GB DDR2 SDRAM, (1GB Integrated) 2 DIMMs" this means...I mean the integrated part. Does it mean that 1G of RAM is integrated to the MB? so I'll have one free slot? But it expressively says 2 DIMMs...hhmm...also, the Latitude D630N forces me to buy a USB flashdrive, it complains about compatibility if I uncheck that option. _________________ Regards,

Quote: | 40GB Hard Drive, 8MM, 4200RPM | I would not want that if possible. I once had such HD in a laptop with Gentoo on it and it is way to slow for my taste when it comes to sync and compiling.

Why, if I may ask, are you only looking at Dell? Unless my future employer only contributes/pays for a specific brand laptop, I'd look seriously at Lenovo. I'd imagine that it would be a lot easier getting everything to work if the laptop is compatible with SuSE. Plus, I'd love to have the additional security Thinkpads have. Built-in fingerprint reader? Yes please!
But I'd only go for their Thinkpads, I'd stay away from their 3000 series. Although that may also be because I very rarely play games on computers any more, and am much more concerned about battery life and portability. But you should take a look at their Thinkpads. http://shop.lenovo.com/
Judging by your comments, their R series may be good for you. Personally, I'd go for either their X series (12.1" display) or a 14.1" T series. I was able to price an X61s that looked very attractive for under $1,500.

Thanks for the ideas!!
Yea that 4200rpm is a little disturbing....and the D630N doesn't come with windows already...i think the Flash drive thing is probably a bug in their site.
As for Lenovo...well, I work for an IBM partner...we get all their laptops at 35% discounts, I'd love a T61p (under 1200$), but we have a 1 laptop/quarter quota, and someone used that up in our company for now, I'll have to wait until January for the next one. I also have a R60 at the office now, it's nice but not as good as good as the latitude one of my friend has. Also, it comes with windows.....and as a way of supporting Dell et all who bring Linux to the mass market, I'm trying to restrain from buying anything that comes with a windows (or other closed source software *ahem* Apple) in it...
I checked out the Lenovo T61, it's pretty neat, however I have 2 small problems with it, first is the Intel Graphic...I'd go for an nVidia anytime. The second problem is a moral issue...i.e. knowing that I could get it at a discount but having to pay full price just kills :p _________________ Regards,

Hmm I forgot to also point you to HP - I write this on a nx6325, for over a year its running Gentoo like a charm. Everything works (I never tried to use the fingerprintsensor) even the suspend modes and the IGP...

You _can_ always return the copy of windows they sell you for a refund.
How exactly that works out is up to the vendor tho... some refuse to do it, others won't say a word about it. Still... MS gives you every right to return their software (to the vendor that sold you the comp) if you're not happy with it. _________________ If someone solves a problem for you say thanks... and put [SOLVED] in the title! |

I didn't know that! I tried to talk dell into giving me a discount for not wanting the OS last time and they refused...anyways...I just called dell about the Flash drive they want to force me to buy, and I am told that I had to pay some 110$ taxes on the laptop as it's being imported from Malaysia...I guess I'll have a good look into HPs and Lenovos (assuming they don't have the taxes). Lenovo has one 14" with nVidia but it's not a wide screen...dilemma dilemma...still haven't looked at HPs but i remember they were not very flexible in terms of letting you choose the hardware. _________________ Regards,

I checked out the HPs...they were pretty nice! I tried to customize 6910p, the starting price was 1283$, after removing windows and office (about 400$) and adding the memory, cpu, graphics and so on (about 400$ too) I got a system that costs 1854$!!! now is that a bug or should I go get my eyes checked? _________________ Regards,

I am looking at the same d630 with the same set up as well.
I am looking at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Dell_Latitude_D630
I did not find anything real similar in ASUS as I like the ASUS cases better
the flash drive is such a funny deal. (EDIT must have been a error in the site it is removed now) A waterproof 8gb drive goes for less than $50 on ebay
HP and 1 button mice are out of the question for me.
hmmm The only thing I miss is the s-video out connector.
a similar toshiba:

Seems other linux users have had problems with this chip eventhough it seems it is similar to the dell?
here is the Thinkpad:

If you click "do not agree"at the windows license and never use it you can return it for a refund of about $199, but is takes alot of time.
bertaboy could you adjust the link in your post? It seems to make the page display very wide.
Any thoughts on these?? _________________ Donate to Gentoo

To compare the 2...
Toshiba:
Pros - Quote: | Size (and possibly weight)
DVD burner
Resolution
Bluetooth (if you need it) | Cons - Quote: | HDD
Possibly the battery (no info) |
Lenovo:
Pros - Quote: | HDD (larger, faster)
CPU (very slight advantage)
Battery | Cons - Quote: | Size
Resolution
No DVD burner
No Bluetooth | It all comes down to what you want from a laptop. If you want portability and (slightly) better overall multimedia experience... go for the Toshiba.
My personal favourite atm (you can bash me all you want for this, I know it's not the _best_ of choices) is the Acer Aspire 5520 (with the 7000M nvidia graphics - no need for 8400/8600). I'm inclined to think it's the best value for money in my situation - which is to say, I don't need a rugged case (plastic works just fine for me, I just carry the lappy to work and back home every day, so it doesn't get pushed around too much), no need for extreme battery life (10 min is more than enough for me). They go for something like $700.
Now _if_ I wanted something Ultra-mega-awesomely-portable... FlyBooks make me drool. Waaaay too much for my good. _________________ If someone solves a problem for you say thanks... and put [SOLVED] in the title! |

I haven't looked at the Toshibas' yet, but what I am looking for is something robust, I could go for Inspiron over Latitude any time with same specs at a cheaper price. As I said, I need it for the road, and 2 dell's that I have used were very satisfactory (they both lasted over 3 years!! and still being used by my parents and sister) and Dell also comes with a 3 years warranty, thats a ++ for careless people like me (I know it doesn't cover accidents, but it's better than any other brands)
A colleague has a 15.4" Latitude with WUXGA display, it looked awesome! but costs about 100$ more, if I can find someone in Delaware to ship it without tax i'd probably get that =) _________________ Regards,
