Having trouble installing alsa.
I got to the "running and unmuting" section of the install guide and when I
#amixer
I got an error (the one they mentioned)
So I did the steps mentioned to correct the error but when I typed amixer again the same error came up
Some Info:
localhost root # grep audio /proc/pci
Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] (rev 6).

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd

## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)

## Read alsa-driver's INSTALL file in /usr/share/doc for more info.

Make certain that you do not have any card specific support compiled into your kernel (either directly or as a module.)
Given this is after the installation document and onto the Desktop Configuration Guide moving this thread from the Installing Gentoo forum into the Hardware & Laptops forum.

Have you already found a solution to your problem? I'm having similar problesm, which occurred after I rebuilt some kernel modules. Notice that I do not have any other module in the kernel/drivers/sound dir, but soundcore.o
When I use the old module dir, I can load everything, but I cannot unmute the stuff. But I'd like to get it running with the new modules, of course. _________________ I am the Shield-Anvil. And I am not yet done. |

Can anyone help with this. I am having the exact same problem with the exact same sound card. I do not have card specific drivers selected in the kernel not as module or at all.
I'm sure I'm just missing something here. One thing I noticed is when I do an lsmod after following all there steps i still don't see any of my sound modules. If i modprobe them I do but according to the directions you don't have to modprobe and put them in the /etc/modules.autoload.
By the by I did try that and it didn't work either. |

Have you added alsa to your runlevel so that it starts automatically? Also did you remember to modify the files as directed?
Let us know what you have and haven't done from the documentation given.
