I was having a problem where I could get no sound out of my sound card. The card required the intel8x0 module. It appears that many have had similar problems with this module/card, and thought this might help.

I've tried it compiled into the kernel, as modules, and with alsa-driver. I've used alsaconf and tried editing the /etc/modules.d/alsa file directly.

There was no sound when executing cat /dev/urandom >/dev/dsp

The solution was to downgrade alsa-utils-1.0.11 > alsa-utils-1.0.10

The relevant info for my machine is below:

Code:
$ uname -r
2.6.16-suspend2-r9

Code:

Weird. The only two files provided by alsa-utils that would seen to have any issue on sound playing would be /etc/conf.d/alsasound and /etc/init.d/alsaound. Maybe something has changed between versions.

Maybe backup the the 1.0.10 versions and then install 1.0.11 and do a diff of those two files and see if you can see anything that changed.

I was having a hell of a time with the in-kernel alsa driver for ice1724 (Chaintech v710). I was using alsa-driver previously, I did everything I could to make the in-kernel drivers work. I'm a 5-year veteran and I've done all kinds of alsa configurations. Turns out, after the update/uninstall of alsa-driver, I no longer had an /etc/asound.conf or asoundrc... I'm not sure which one I actually need.

After creating one, it still didn't work.

I saw your post and I didn't have the same symptoms (/dev/dsp still spat sound, OSS worked), but thought, what the hell. I downgraded alsa-utils to 1.0.10 and restarted /etc/init.d/alsasound... wow, all my old mixer settings were back and it was recognizing the card! I reinstalled alsa-utils-1.0.11 and it still worked. Sweet! I think my problem was the missing asound.conf or asoundrc, hope this helps someone else.
