well my two cents on "college" at www.vc.edu in austin texas.

It's CRAP! honestly i hate it, it isn't even a real school, it's a tech school that the "degree" only works in texas. Granted i did learn alot about routing, i was sooo close to my CCNA but couldn't subnet for the life of me. I do though have the pratical knowalge of a CCNP which being this a linux fourm you must kinda like the command line. that's all cisco really is, which is fun, but you have to treat it like a game otherwise you'll never be able to troubleshoot your AS(s) across an Area 0. :) have fun man it's worth it but make sure you can transfer the credits out otherwise, like me you'll have wasted alot of money.

Hey! I recognize those courses! :-)

I'm an Instructor at NAIT, in the CNT (Computer Engineering Technology) program, so I am obviously biased. The CNT program has much more coverage of hardware and low-level operations on computers. There is a strong emphasis on things like mathematics, algorithm design, OOP. The programming courses are all C++ (with a few minor exceptions, like internet programming). Students also build a small computer (actually soldering on the board) and learn to program it using assembly language, and there are a number of courses in Electronics, computer repair, measurement and control, etc.

The CNA program will not offer as much programming, and little or no electronics and hardware design. They would arguably have a stronger emphasis on computer/network operation and administration, while we have more emphasis on design and interfacing. They do seem to have more coverage of Linux and server configuration as well as network administration. CNA is also, obviously, a shorter program.

Both programs will have student advisors who can answer specific questions for you, and can arrange to let you follow a class around for a day to see some of the courses and topics covered.

As a former Computer Science major, I too am very biased. Go for the Computer Engineering degree - it will give you a much broader understanding of computing techology and a firmer grounding for whatever career you choose, even if it is network administration.
