PostPosted: Thu Jun 29, 2006 1:10 pm    Post subject: [Solved] Kernel panic on boot: VFS: Unable to mount root fs Reply with quote

I've just installed Gentoo a few days ago, and ever since then I've been trying to fix this error.
Here's the error message:

Code:
VFS: annot open root device "hda4" or unknown-block (0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option.
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)

There doesn't seem to be any other error messages above this (that have not scrolled off screen anyway).
I've been going through the forum and have found many people with this problem (mostly from 2004/2005...), and I have tried some of the suggestions posted then, but my problem still remains so.

Some people fixed their problem by compiling /dev fs support into their kernel, while others say not to enable it because Gentoo uses udev (whatever that is), and I on the other hand can't find /dev anywhere in the kernel config file (I'm guessing all the options, selected or not, show up in the config file?)...

Interestingly, removing the "root=" option gives me "unkown-block (3,4)" instead. Does this mean anything?

I'm using a Biostar 210T small-form-factor PC with Intel 865(G?) chipset, integrated audio and video, with 1 parallel ATA hard drive and 1 IDE cdrom drive.

Here's my configuration (comment lines removed). Hope somebody can tell me what I did wrong... Thanks.

(Sorry to drop the bomb on you guys like this, I just thought it might be useful to have the kernel config in the post.)

Code:
fstab:

/dev/hda4      /      reiserfs   noatime      0 1
/dev/hda3      none      swap      sw      0 0
/dev/hda2      /home      reiserfs   noatime      0 2
/dev/dvdrw      /mnt/cdrom   auto      noauto,user,rw,group   0 0
proc         /proc      proc      defaults   0 0
shm         /dev/shm   tmpfs      nodev,nosuid,noexec   0 0

Code:
grub.conf:

default 0
timeout 5

Having the exact same problem, help would be appreciated...

Though I got this problem when having installed the 2.6.17 kernel, must be something I have missed in the kernel config... still my old 2.6.16-r7 kernel works (what I'm using right now to get the system to work) thankfully so I'm not fucked totally. Anyway, help would be appreciated until I get this solved.

Edit: Got rid of my VFS problem... had the wrong SATA chipset in the kernel, changed from VIA (that was the predefined one) to the intel one. Anyway, to the OP, hope you solve yours, follow the hints in the above post, you should find it...

Ah solved it. It turns out that, instead of having built the Intel IDE driver into the kernel and leaving the VIA driver as a module as I thought I had done, I did it the other way round! How blur can one get?

Thanks for pointing me in that direction, antipod. How blur can one get, huh?

greyhats,

look under Device Drivers ---> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support ---> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support ---> Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL disk/cdrom/tape/floppy support ---> PCI IDE chipset support ---> Generic PCI bus-master DMA support and select your IDE driver. Don't forget to compile it in the kernel <*> and not as a module <M>.

This thread helped me out.

I wonder if somebody messed with the ebuild for the kernel, before the defaults seemed to make sense and I didn't have to change much, this time (the time I HAD to have the machine working by this morning) some of the obvious stuff was missing, and I wound up with a kernel which did not have a functional IDE driver.

I'm embarrassed that it took me so long to figure that out. I spent a weekend trying to make my @#%@ machine boot off the hard drive. The thing that makes me suspect a perhaps inappropriate ebuild change is that everyone else had the same problems, and seemed to be at the same time. It's probably my stupidity rather than someone else's, though. I have a mild curiosity about what happened, but no time to explore. I just know that I'll pay more attention to my kernel configuration than I have for the past few years.

1clue,

just to clear things up, what you're complaining about is not an ebuild change, but instead a change on the default config of the kernel.

Hmm,

Not so much complaining as expressing curiosity. I didn't think at any point that my problems were any other than PEBKAC.

Things change, and this obviously changed. Had I read the instructions, I suspect I would have noticed a comment in there about that. I stopped reading the instructions for a kernel build years ago, and maybe I need to start again.

Thanks for clearing that up, though. So I guess the kernel.org folks have made this change?

I didn't meant to imply that you were nagging.
If you're using the vanilla-sources, yes it may be a change from kernel.org. If however, you're using the gentoo-sources, then the change was definitely introduced by the Gentoo kernel team.

I'm using gentoo-sources.

Point of fact: I know you folks that maintain Gentoo hear complaints more than they hear praise. I write software for a living, and I most definitely see things that way.

I STILL haven't looked at the documentation in the kernel for changes or warnings, even though I'm pretty sure it's there. My problems are not your fault, they're mine. I obviously think it's more entertaining to cruise through forums than to read the directions. Something to do with testosterone overpowering neural networks maybe?

By the bye, I got X running last night. (I read the directions for that, I haven't done that a hundred times) Far, far easier than I had thought, in spite of having to compile the kernel a third time to get mouse support. (Yes, I know about modules)

Thank you for making a great distribution, and thank you for your input on this thread.

Sorry to be such an utter noob, but I would really like to learn more about the kernel.

Can someone explain how I "select the right IDE driver" for my "device"? I'm a bit lost how I research this and get it correct.

[My solution so far has been to say Y to every item in the IDE section :( ]

First thing you have to know your hardware. If you have the documentation from your system, it may help to determine if you have ide or sata or scsi or whatever hardware. Also applies to video cards, sound cards, etc. Or open your box and take a look.

One thing I like to do is to use "sux". It is a program similar to "su" (switch user), except it lets the super user use X from the terminal. This way I use make xconfig. It will bring up a graphical interface to configure the kernel.

With make xconfig, I find it easier to access the help comments in the kernel configuration, and I find it easier to jump from section to section when I think a section is doing something another section did. There are lots of helpful descriptions, and comments like, you may need this, but probably not, but it won't hurt to say Yes, and comments like, unless you really know what you are doing, say Yes, and of course the ever loving, if you have an IDE drive do not compile this as a module comment.

Once you get a working configuration, only make a few changes at a time and write down what they are, that way, when it doesn't work, you can go back to where you were.

When upgrading, you can copy your old config file to your new source directory and use "make oldconfig". This imports your old kernel settings, and asks you yes, no or module to new settings. The default option is capitalized (Y,n,m), and I usually go with the default. Sometimes the default is a number (like in the last change, something about block size, I just typed in the default number shown). I go over the kernel in make xconfig afterwords.

Finally, to make the steps to upgrading a kernel easier, make a text file with the actual commands that you use to do it and put in comments that you need to remember. That way when you upgrade, you can concentrate on streamlining your kernel and making the right choices on new options, rather than on the mechanics of upgrading the kernel.

I've got it down to four commands, basically:

copying the old config to the new, and changing the symlink, running make oldconfig and running make xconfig to check the configuration.

compile the kernel and modules

mount boot, copy the old kernel, config, and map to the backup on boot, copy the new kernel, config, and map to boot

clean out old kernel sources and files

Since I use grub, I don't have to update my boot loader, but if you use lilo, I think you need to do something with lilo.

I am not at my gentoo box, so I didn't post the exact commands, and they would be different depending on how you set things up anyway.
