As long as I have used linux(which mind you has only been off and on for the ast few years) I have been mostly a KDE guy. Just because it was the first one I ever used(Mandrake 9). I see enlightenment and I see it is very customizable, but how does it stack up to KDE? If I like the management tools KDE gives me, will I find a counterpart in E, or can I use the same ones? Thanks for the info I am just trying to get myself established on what I am doing in my new gentoo installation.

From what I know about enlightenment (which isnt much) I can say it's a lot more lightweight and customizable than the complete desktop's like KDE and gnome. Lots of people prefer englightenment because of it's speed, and how they can configure it to their needs. I think this window manager is meant for more experienced linuxers who arn't afraid of editing configuration files, I don't think it comes with a nice control centre like kcontrol.

KDE is more complete, and has a program for just about anything you could want to do. Enlightenment can still run these KDE programs though, but they wont integrate as nicely as they do with KDE. So I think you should just try it out. If you don't like it, unmerge it and go back to KDE.

They're two different 'genre' of WM. KDE is a full desktop environment while Enlightenment is a Window Manager. E17 is progressing towards a full desktop environment.

If your looking to transition into a more lightweight environment, I suggest FluxBox or E16/17. They're one of my favorite file managers. While KDE/Gnome was the first thing I used, I prefer Enlightenment more.

Moved from Desktop Environments to Duplicate Threads in favour of Favorite Window Manager?
