Hi there
I am using gentoo with gnome-light interface, but it actually let me with 2 GB only
I would like to know some things taht I can surely delete from my pc. For example, I guess that the majority of the tar files in /usr/portage/distfiles can be excluded, right?
Can you tell me tricks to safe some space of my poor hard drive??? _________________ "Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!

Here's what can be cleaned up from portage:
/usr/portage/distfiles - you can delete all files, if needed emerge will download them
/usr/portage/packages - contains precompiled packages, also safe to delete
If there are files in /var/tmp/portage as well they can be deleted as well.
You can also check if you have various slots of some packages, and delete/unmerge the old ones:
Kernelsources:
/usr/src - if your current kernel is running just fine you can delete the sources of the old ones by deleting the directories containing them. This can free several hundred MBs.
KDE:
/usr/kde - if there is more than one subdir here, you have several versions of KDE installed while probably only using one. See this HOWTO unmerge old KDE versions. This also can free many MBs.
GCC:
If you have an up-to-date system, you probably have already emerged GCC 3.4 while 3.3 still is on your HDD. See this guide on how to upgrade to 3.4 and unmerge 3.3.
Python:
Probably 2.4 is merged but 2.3 is there as well. Run python-updater and then emerge -C python-2.3
All in all this should help you free several hundred MBs. |

Or some of the arch's in /usr/src/linux/ that your processor considers comptition. Wondering; "Am I just different? Or outdated?". _________________ Give adaptive answers to unknown problems! |
