Hi,
ultrasparc10 here. Is it possible to have a pure 64-bit installation?? And what all things might not work?? The current install was done by some1 else and it is 32-bit I think. As while installing something, it said "detecting 64 bit os....no" kind of a statement.
thanks

I am running a system entirely compiled around amd64. But, although that is the case, it isn't 100% 64bit. There are some programs such as firefox and MPlayer that need to be in the 32 bit binary form in order to accomplish necessary tasks. (Such as compatibility with flash for Firefox and win32codecs for MPlayer) _________________ Copyright 2006, Winged 2.0 |

64 bit is not support on SPARC for multiple reasons, some of which I'll list below
- 64 bit binaries are slower on the SPARCV9 architecture than their 32 bit equivalents (may seem backwards but it is true and one of the reasons why Solaris has a 32 bit userland as well)
- Not all programs will build in 64 bits, particularly the boot loader SILO
- Very few applications can take advantage of being built in 64 bits rather than 32
- Managing a userland that is predominately setup for 32 bit userland but needs the occasional 64 bit library or app is backwards to the current multilib implementation AMD64 has, so it would require re-work to support both AMD64 and SPARCV9

ah. So sun people just make things for fun of it or something?? The hard disk supplied is udma5 capable, while the hardware restricts it to mdma2 and stuff like that.......man _________________ Pdict - dockable dictionary client for linux

Yup.
Lots of resume padders worked at Sun...for a short while, but long enough to leave lots of 'almost done -- someone new can easily finish it' hardware behind. Outside of task switching (on RISC), and large SMP, Sun is second rate. The major reason I use them is for form-factor. _________________ Being a Gentoo user means living in a house inhabited by a family of crazed carpenters. When you wake up, the house is different.
