All packages are build in
/var/tmp/portage/
so clean up this directory.

well this one is one that is up to you. if you use a modem or hate wasting your dl consider this a last resort

rm /usr/portage/distfiles/*

that will remove all the packages that you have downloaded for installation.
if you do remove that you could save a lot of space but u will have to redownload them to reinstall/recompile the package. This may or may not be a problem [for you]

You'll have to re-download all distribution files on updates and recompiles.

If your installation is not totally new, then you probably have old distribution files with the new ones, so you might want to try this:
1.) Go to /usr/portage/distfiles and remove a few files that are obvously obsolete (to get a few MBs)
2.) emerge gentoolkit
3.) Run eclean-dist
