Hi there,

I'm trying to install Gentoo SPARC on my Sun Ultra1.
I've set up rarpd and tftpd as told in the documentation but it still doesn't work.
All I get are these messages in syslog (and of course "Timeout waiting for ARP/RAPR packet"):

Quote:

Jun 30 12:58:16 dronf rarpd[10208]: rarp who-is 8:0:20:88:ea:86 tell 8:0:20:88:ea:86 not found
Jun 30 12:58:24 dronf rarpd[10208]: rarp who-is 8:0:20:88:ea:86 tell 8:0:20:88:ea:86 not found
Jun 30 12:58:36 dronf rarpd[10208]: rarp who-is 8:0:20:88:ea:86 tell 8:0:20:88:ea:86 not found

Jun 30 12:59:37 dronf rarpd[10208]: rarp who-is 8:0:20:88:ea:86 tell 8:0:20:88:ea:86 not found
Jun 30 12:59:43 dronf rarpd[10208]: rarp who-is 8:0:20:88:ea:86 tell 8:0:20:88:ea:86 not found
Jun 30 12:59:51 dronf rarpd[10208]: rarp who-is 8:0:20:88:ea:86 tell 8:0:20:88:ea:86 not found

First thought was, that I misspelled the MAC in /etc/ethers, but it seems like it's another problem.

Quote:

dronf ~ # grep ^8 /etc/ethers
8:0:20:88:ea:86 sunshine.fnordnet.lan
dronf ~ # grep sunshine /etc/hosts
192.168.178.36 sunshine.fnordnet.lan

Any ideas?

P.S.: I've got to netboot because the CDROM drive is broken.

Okay, after fmccor told me I should run tftpd and rarpd by hand, it began to work... one step further!
Now it's the tftpd that begins to kill my nerves.

Quote:

Jun 30 14:55:59 dronf atftpd[10112]: Serving C0A8B224 to 192.168.178.36:45691
Jun 30 14:56:04 dronf atftpd[10112]: timeout: retrying...
Jun 30 14:56:09 dronf atftpd[10112]: timeout: retrying...
Jun 30 14:56:14 dronf atftpd[10112]: timeout: retrying...
Jun 30 14:56:19 dronf atftpd[10112]: timeout: retrying...

The Box itself shows:

Quote:

ok boot net
Boot device: /sbus/ledma@e,8400010/le@e8c00000 File and args:
8400

And then it doesnt react on anything. Seems like it freezes.

Did you ever got it right? I am looking into buying a old Ultra1 but cannot find much info on how capable this machine is and if Gentoo will run on it.

The numbers should count up as it downloads the netboot image.

I think the process is quite sensitive to any network delays - I tried to netboot over wireless and it kept timing out, when I used a crossover cable it worked perfectly...

Are your machines on the same lan segment - and, is it a busy lan segment, maybe try a crossover cable?

So, in the hardware compatibility list there is no Ultra1. Are you running an Ultra1 sun pc with gentoo? In that case, which kernel you have installed?

Thanks, i'm going to install via Netboot and i need to know.

Yes the Ultra 1 works fine. I've used one on an off and had no problems, even with netboot.

Two possible gotchas to keep an eye out for

  • The Ultra 1 is still prone to high disk I/O lockups using kernel 2.6. It's a known issue, no clue when its getting fixed. If you plan on doing things that require lots of disk I/O, you may be better off on kernel 2.4.

  • If you have more than one NIC in the Ultra 1, the boot netcommand may not work quite as you expect. If you don't use the onboard NIC, and you haven't redefined the devalias for net in OBP, then chances are you will run into this.

It boots ok, with the image from the documentation. Now we are trying to compile it.

I read here:

http://www.ultralinux.org/faq.html#s_2

that the default kernel config is in arch/sparc64/defconfig.

Next week maybe i finish the job. Im studying now, thanks for the reply.
