Code:

Sun Ultra 1 UPA/SBus (UltraSPARC 167MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.11, 256 MB memory installed

Boot device: disk0  File and args:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.

ok probe-scsi
Target 0
  Unit 0   Disk     QUANTUM ATLAS_V__9_SCA  0200149005550899  000218

If I use a recent LiveCD and boot via: gentoo root=/dev/sda1, it boots up with a few complaints. I've run silo -f (more than once) without any success. Previously, I ran a 2G SCA drive in the machine without problems, but this 9G drive must have a new wrinkle someplace.

a) Do I need a separate boot partition in the first 2G of drive space?
Code:

fdisk -l /dev/sda

Disk /dev/sda (Sun disk label): 64 heads, 32 sectors, 8753 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 bytes

   Device Flag    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1           315      8753   8640512   83  Linux native
/dev/sda2  u          0        29     29696   83  Linux native
/dev/sda3             0      8753   8963072    5  Whole disk
/dev/sda4  u         29       315    292864   82  Linux swap

b) What should be in /boot ?
Code:

ll /boot/
total 6314
drwxr-xr-x  3 root root    1024 Jun  7 12:37 .
drwxr-xr-x 18 root root    4096 Jun  3 16:03 ..

-rw-r--r--  1 root root 1015650 Feb 22 12:22 initrd-genkernel-sparc64-2.4.32-sparc-r2
-rw-r--r--  1 root root    6992 Jun  7 12:37 isofs.b

-rw-r--r--  1 root root   64369 Jun  7 12:37 silotftp.b
-rw-r--r--  1 root root     512 Jun  7 12:37 ultra.b
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 2418341 Jun  3 15:50 vmlinux-2.4.32

c) something wrong in silo.conf ?
Code:

}cat /boot/silo.conf
partition = 2
root = /dev/sda1
timeout = 10
#
image = /boot/kernel-genkernel-sparc64-2.4.32-sparc-r2
        label = 4.32-g
#
image = /boot/vmlinux-2.4.32
        label = 4.32

This was an install off the 2006.0 LiveCD, an emerge sync, then basic networking tools + my favorites added.

TIA

a followup

since
Code:

Boot device: disk0  File and args:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
ok boot cdrom
Boot device: /sbus/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@6,0:f  File and args:

works, I decided to hack away and tried
Code:

ok reset
Resetting ...

Sun Ultra 1 UPA/SBus (UltraSPARC 167MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.11, 256 MB memory installed, Serial #8177085.
Ethernet address 8:0:20:7c:c5:bd, Host ID: 807cc5bd.

Boot device: disk0  File and args:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.

ok boot /sbus/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@0,0:f  File and args:
SILO Version 1.4.11
boot:
Allocated 8 Megs of memory at 0x40000000 for kernel

Cannot find /boot/kernel-genkernel-sparc64-2.4.32-sparc-r2 (Unknown ext2 error)

Image not found.... try again

which is an improvement, then
Code:

Image not found.... try again
boot: 2/boot/vmlinux-2.4.32

usually boots on serial, but seems to kernel panic on the sun keyboard (maybe a typo, since I cannot cut and paste).

So it appears that the boot alias is broken in the prom, and that silo still needs help. How do I fix the OBP, or upgrade it?

After it was clear that SILO was working fine, I solved the OBP problem this way:

Code:

ok nvunalias disk0
ok nvalias disk0 /sbus/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@0,0:f
ok nvstore
ok reset

Now it hasn't automatically boot yet, but now "boot disk0" does work. Once I track down the default bootdisk and change it from disk to disk0, everything should be fine.
