|
|
so i decided to istall gentoo 2006, since ive wanted to try it for a long while because i have always used windows.
installing the gentoo wizard wouldnt let me have grub after 3 attempts, so i went to doing it the manual way.
now i am following the handbook to the letter, however...i used genkernel, and now in the handbook it says this:
Code: | To view all available modules, run the following find command. Don't forget to substitute "<kernel version>" with the version of the kernel you just compiled:
Code Listing 21: Viewing all available modules
# find /lib/modules/<kernel version>/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko'
|
kernel version?!? how am i supposed to know what that is? i have tried allsorts but get the response No such file or directory.
can someone help me? _________________ Trying my Best to learn linux, so please be patient with me...

You kernel version is the version of gentoo-sources you installed. If you only have one version installed which is the most likely situation you can type "find /lib/modules/" then hit TAB and it should automatically fill it in. If not type "emerge -s gentoo-sources" and use the latest installed version from the output. If it is 2.6.16-r9 then you would use 2.6.16-gentoo-r9 because it is the gentoo kernel. Gentoo is generally not for people new to Linux so beware of that. |

that only works if he is running the version of the kernel that is installed but he is running the livecd's kernel. Also 'uname -r' would give you just the kernel version. |

great captain thanks alot. i did wonder since that command gave me a different kernel to what the handbook told me to keep a note of, and this is what i tried:
kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.16-gentoo-r7
thats what i was trying...so halfway there since it was only everything after the x86.
i have operated gentoo before just never used it, but it works now thanks to the Tab.
sorry for the n00b question, but im learning
thanks thanks thanks _________________ Trying my Best to learn linux, so please be patient with me...
