I have a newly installed system and did a modular X install. The X system works fine except my video card is a ati x1300 and the latest driver is only supported up to Xorg 7.0 at the moment. The ati and radeon drivers that come with xorg will not work.. xorg wont even start all I can get is vesa at the moment. I wanted to know what packages needed to be downgraded in order to make the ati driver happy.

Hi,

You need to downgrade xorg-server to 1.0.2-r4. When you do that, you may also need to downgrade your keyboard and mouse drivers at the same time (xf86-input-*).

1) Remove xorg-related entries from /etc/portage/package.unmask.
2) If you have ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" in make.conf then do nothing in this step.
And if you don't have that entry (and have been specifying keywording in /etc/portage/package.keywords) then you'll need put "x11-base/xorg-x11 ~x86" into that file.
3) Now run "emerge world --update --deep --newuse"
If you had the make.conf entry I mentioned, you'll get the stuff downgraded to 7.0 (as it is masked ~x86).
And if you were doing the package.keywords bit, you'll find the command fails finding something needed that was masked. So you unmask that package the same way as before and re-run the command (repeat until no masked packages mentioned).

edit: What I'm getting at is you're using something hard-masked. Removing your entry that tells portage "use the hard-masked stuff anyway" will drop you to the ~x86 (which xorg-7.0 is ~x86)
