Hi !

I recently did emerge --sync

And tried to do emerge --update

what I get is:
[blocks B ] sys-apps/pam-login (is blocking sys-apps/shadow-4.0.15-r2)
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/shadow-4.0.15-r2 [4.0.14-r1]

Any ideas?
Thanks[/topic]

That's normal.

Code:
emerge -C sys-apps/pam-login
emerge sys-apps/shadow

Unmerge pam-login (emerge -C pam-login)

Answering my own question:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-451428.html
(Search for pam -- way down)

According to that thread, shadow now includes pam, so pam-login is unnecessary.

Well, shadow may embody a lot of the pam_login functionality, but something strange is still happening for me:

First some background
-my home-dir is NFS-mounted from a file server (yup, even at home, as well as work)
-my user details are held in LDAP

During bootup, after yanking pam_login and emerg'ing shadow, I now see that udevd is consulting nss_ldap, and cannot contact my LDAP server. This isn't too surprising, since I don't recall that networking is brought up until much later :-( udevd continues to try to contact my LDAP server, with progressively longer timeouts, then repeats. Ultimately, I guess it times out (I didn't watch it all; got boring after a few minutes of waiting so I made coffee).

After it finally booted completely, I was able to successfully log in, both locally (xdm) and remotely (SSH).

I'm not sure if it will be helpful, but here are nsswitch.conf and nsswitch.ldap:

Code:

# /etc/nsswitch.conf:
# $Header: /var/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/sys-libs/glibc/files/nsswitch.conf,v 1.1 2005/05/17 00:52:41 vapier Exp $

passwd:      compat     ldap
shadow:      compat     ldap
group:       compat     ldap

# passwd:    db files nis
# shadow:    db files nis
# group:     db files nis

hosts:       files dns
networks:    files dns

services:    db files
protocols:   db files
rpc:         db files
ethers:      db files
netmasks:    files
netgroup:    files
bootparams:  files

automount:   files
aliases:     files

Code:

#ident $Id: nsswitch.ldap,v 2.4 2003/10/02 02:36:25 lukeh Exp $
#
# An example file that could be copied over to /etc/nsswitch.conf; it
# uses LDAP conjunction with files.
#
# "hosts:" and "services:" in this file are used only if the
# /etc/netconfig file has a "-" for nametoaddr_libs of "inet" transports.

# the following two lines obviate the "+" entry in /etc/passwd and /etc/group.
passwd:         files ldap
group:          files ldap

# consult files/dns first, we will need it to resolve the LDAP host. (If we
# can't resolve it, we're in infinite recursion, because libldap calls
# gethostbyname(). Careful!)
hosts:          files dns ldap

# LDAP is nominally authoritative for the following maps.
services:   ldap [NOTFOUND=return] files
networks:   ldap [NOTFOUND=return] files
protocols:  ldap [NOTFOUND=return] files
rpc:        ldap [NOTFOUND=return] files
ethers:     ldap [NOTFOUND=return] files

# no support for netmasks, bootparams, publickey yet.
netmasks:   files
bootparams: files
publickey:  files
automount:  files

# I'm pretty sure nsswitch.conf is consulted directly by sendmail,
# here, so we can't do much here. Instead, use bbense's LDAP
# rules ofr sendmail.
aliases:    files
sendmailvars:   files

# Note: there is no support for netgroups on Solaris (yet)
netgroup:   ldap [NOTFOUND=return] files

Any help for this slow-boot / udevd impact would be appreciated! TIA!

-Gordp

I had a similar problem with ldap and udev. I needed to add the user and group “tss” to my system to allow it to boot. The file "50-udev.rules" uses this user.
