Trying to emerge opera-8.54 and I get the following below.

Code:
xc-cube ~ # emerge opera
Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> Emerging (1 of 1) www-client/opera-8.54 to /
>>> checking ebuild checksums ;-)
>>> checking auxfile checksums ;-)
>>> checking miscfile checksums ;-)
>>> checking opera-8.54-20060330.5-shared-qt.i386-en.tar.bz2 ;-)
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking opera-8.54-20060330.5-shared-qt.i386-en.tar.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/opera-8.54/work
>>> Source unpacked.
>>> Compiling source in /var/tmp/portage/opera-8.54/work/opera-8.54-20060330.5-shared-qt.i386-en ...
>>> Source compiled.
>>> Test phase [not enabled]: www-client/opera-8.54

>>> Install opera-8.54 into /var/tmp/portage/opera-8.54/image/ category www-client

System wide configuration files:
  /var/tmp/portage/opera-8.54/image//etc//opera6rc
  /var/tmp/portage/opera-8.54/image//etc//opera6rc.fixed
 would be ignored if installed with the prefix "/var/tmp/portage/opera-8.54/image//opt/opera".
Do you want to install them in /var/tmp/portage/opera-8.54/image//etc/ [ y,n | yes,no ] ?

Shortcut icons will be ignored if installed with the prefix "/var/tmp/portage/opera-8.54/image//opt/opera".
Do you want to (try to) install them in default locations [ y,n | yes,no ] ?

Thanks for that. Sticking with Opera 8.52 for the time being - emerges and works fine! I like the way it re-opens all the tabs you had previously open last time you used it.

The sandbox is there for a reason. What's the downside to doing it the above way?

Yes, same error for me. I'll wait a bit. The question from mrpete is very good. I look forward for an answer to it.

Same here. Nounours trick wrked. But I would still want to know what
Code:
FEATURES="-sandbox"
does? Are there any security risks?

At a guess I would say that it may have accidentally been tested with the sandbox turned off and therefore given the all clear. There's a couple of lines here explaining what the sandbox is,

I do not know where i read before, but i am sure that it is not good idea to disable sanbox.

What i find strange is that i can install opera-8.54 on my Laptop successfully but not on my desktop. Both systems have the same version of portage and gcc :roll:

Have you sync'd at different times, so maybe the more recent sync version has this issue resolved..
also, are you sure that sandbox is enabled in both make.conf's ??

Yes, it can touch important files in the system. But here, the only files causing the problem of violation are 3 png icons files for opera. It's not too risky to pass over the restriction in this case.

On Both systems is sanbox enabled. It is really strange :roll:.

This seems to be taking longer than the typical "sandbox" issue to get fixed...

Sandbox is a precautionary feature that disable ebuilds the hability to write files outside of the working directory where the compilation takes place. Since Opera is a binary package, it does not make much difference if it's runned with sandbox or not.
