I did have glxgears reporting 1000+ fps on a Fujitsu Siemens 7020 which uses the same graphics chip. However, I'm currently having problems getting the GL driver loaded back up! So yes, it is possible.

ive just read that there are differences between i915 and i915GM..this is what i have to use:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 03)
