|
Hi,
I am looking for a good console-based telnet client and a good console-based ftp client (maybe a little bit more comfortable than the standard one - something with a [tab] command line completion thing, for instance).
Also, I would like to install the clients without having to install telnetd and ftpd.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
_Max_ |

I didn't know that anyone was using telnet anymore. I haven't used it for years so I can't help you there. I would suggest using ssh instead (but you proabably already know that).
My favorite ftp console client is ncftp which is available in portage. It is just the client, the ncftpd server costs money. _________________ After Perl everything else is just assembly language. |

Thanks, I will have a look at that one.
The only reason that I need a telnet client is that some things here in school are still telnet-based - I guess they figure it is too much of a hassle to explain ssh to people. |

textbased?
ncftp
telenet ...but really reconsider, since telnet is pretty unsecure (ssh!!!)
gui ftp?
kbear (IMO the best gui ftp client i know of, because it's able to move whole dirs from a dir to another dir on the same server) _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

I prefer gftp for both text-based and GUI. _________________ Hmm.. Of course, these are MY opinions - likely to be just as flawed as anyone else's. Um, really, I guess you should assume everyone's speaking out of some external influence. Believe in whatever makes sense to you. |

yafc is the best console ftp client I've ever used. It really is great, looks and feels exactly like bash and very customisable |

I have always loved lukemftp, the default NetBSD FTP client, which I wish was the default on linux systems. Lots of great features, very stable, and a small install. In fact, when I get the hang of portage a bit better, it will be my default ftp cleint (now I have to delete ftp and replace it with lukemftp everytime that part of the system gets updated.)
As for telnet, my only advice is, to not use the same passwords on a system to which you telnet, as you would for a secure system. I also suppose that in the spirit of lukemftp you could emerge net-misc/telnet-bsd ---which also has IPv6 support and is barely perseptiblly larger than netkit-telnetd---what a deal. |

Thanks everyone. I tried ncftp, it really is a lot better than the standard client. And now I will try the other ones, too! |
