hi
when a run a
emerge
i am suppose to get a specific ebuild number to execute once the emerge is over .
as i do not have X on my machine i cannot see what ebuild to run because of the scrolling of the text !!!!!

I understand your english, but I don't understand what you are trying to do. 
You should be able to scroll using Alt+page up/page down, but I still don't understand what number you're talking about.

i made an emerge open_ssl and i don't know what ebuild to run after .....

apparently you are trying to scroll up some screens in order to see what emerge did (maybe you where on another console so you cant even go up a little)
I would suggest you do this:

emerge openssl 2>&1 | tee /tmp/emergelog
|
after that you could use nano to look at /tmp/emergelog and see every line.
