has anyone ever found/experimented with an opensource irc/chat/im server on linux? if so, do you have any recommendations as to the one with the most features/fewest vulnerabilities? thanks.

I run jabberd2. The configuration files are very well documented and easy to setup. If you like Java, you might want to take a look at Wildfire IM Server (formerly named Jive Messenger).
ejabberd on the other hand has the reputation to be very solid.

I'm working with Wildfire and Spark now...thanks for the recommendation. Will look at others, too.
