Well i'm trying to install kdm... but i have a slight problem, kde is already installed

Code:
emerge --pretend kdm

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-data-3.4.3)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdesu-3.4.1)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/khotkeys-3.4.3)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kcminit-3.4.1)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/khelpcenter-3.4.3)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kcontrol-3.4.3)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdm-3.4.3-r1)
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdebase-data-3.4.3
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdesu-3.4.1
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/khotkeys-3.4.3
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kcminit-3.4.1
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/khelpcenter-3.4.3
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kcontrol-3.4.3
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdm-3.4.3-r1

the thing is, i went through my kde, and the same versions it wants to install are the versions i have installed already, except for the kdm.... my question is this, is there a way to overide its dependency check in these situations, or do i just need to unmerge kde and reinstall?

-- edit --

nm, i feel so stupid, i actually knew the answer to this, my brain just farted out from thinking about it too hard, i just unmerged kde-base, then emerged kdm and all was well... oh well, leaving this up for anyone else who looks for an answer to this question

Isn't kdm installed already when the package "kdebase" is installed? I thought kdebase is just a wrapper, and when it's installed, all those things already included are then of course blocked.

I think you having a problem switching between the monolithic ebuilds and the new split ones. You might just be able to unmerge the blockers, then remerge the desired parts of kde.

Previous posters are right, you're attempting to install the split-ebuild version of kdm, which is included as part of the monolitic ebuild kdebase. Theres a migration (from monolithic to split) up here though it might be a bit out of date.

I would like to note however, that I've found split ebuilds to be much better over the long term then the monolithics. While its true that doing a mass migration (that is, say an entire install of KDE) might take a bit longer with the split ebuilds; when it comes to bug-fixes and the likes later on, you've only got a handful of programs to update, opposed to a huge honking chunk of KDE.

This issue has already been discussed in the topic "Blockers in KDE 3.4.1", where it was summarized by Headrush; and it is also covered in The KDE Configuration HOWTO.

Moved from Desktop Environments to Duplicate Threads.
