when starting konqueror the windows starts to open, the HD whirrs a lot and then the process fails.
staring from a command line gives this as it dies
Code:
konqueror: WARNING: Pixmap not found for mimetype inode/directory

ive re-emerged knoqueror-3.4.3 which hasnt fixed it

The warning means the icontheme you're using don't find the icon for folders
(has been corrupted or deleted by mistake?), but I don't think this warning is what is making your konqueror fail.

However, try to reinstall the icon theme, the more complete is crystal SVG but there's plenty of themes containing folder icons
at kde look .....

This comes from a previously working configuration? If so, try to remember when konqueror started to fail,
and check your /var/log/emerge.log
Is possible that you used "emerge --depclean" removing some unwanted (but in reality needed) package?
What you did to your system in the days immediately before the one in which konqueror started to fail?
Are you using a "standard" KDE configuration or did you customized something in a non-standard way
(ex: KDE without arts support, packages coming from outside portage, minimal installation, etc.etc.)

Konqueror was previously working? Do you remember what you did just before
konqueror started to fail? Did you recently changed something in the toolchain (ex: an update to gcc, glibc)?
Someone in the web for a similar issue suggested that your kde may miss some mime package, read here.
You might try to re-emerge the mime packages to test if one/some is/are corrupted.
Another thread googled by me* points mesa as a possible issue with nvidia
drivers (conflict between nvidia-legacy and libgl-dri), try to re-emerge mesa....

*(I just used cut-n-paste to put the error line you found inside google....)

media-libs/mesa and x11-apps/mesa-progs are masked??????
This seems quite strange to me, do you know why these packages are masked?
Is this a normal behaviour of the drivers for your videocard?

try a "emerge -pv x11-libs/mesa" to see if it's another package blocking it.
If isn't, do a "cat /etc/portage/package.mask | grep mesa" to see if it's user-defined....

Code:
gravity ~ # emerge -pv x11-libs/mesa

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "x11-libs/mesa".

gravity ~ # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -pv x11-libs/mesa

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "x11-libs/mesa".
gravity ~ # cat /etc/portage/package.mask | grep mesa
gravity ~ #

could it be a problwm wit the split ebuilds and dependency somewhere?
Should i file it as a bug ?

ops, sorry was "emerge -pv media-libs/mesa" it should give you 2 packages, one is blocking mesa...
Or the bug is just that portage actually doesn't contains ANY stable mesa package , just unstable there
(someone did something BAD updating portage????This situation seem an error to me... but can be caused since modular xorg isn't yet stable...... )

@thecooptoo : if you're using modular xorg, you'll need to unmask and emerge mesa packages too,
if instead you're using xorg older than 7.0, you should re-emerge the whole xorg-x11 package.....
(sorry, emerging just mesa would be one of the advantages of modular xorg....)

Code:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild     U ] x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7 [6.8.2-r6]
gravity ~ #
gravity ~ # emerge -pv media-libs/mesa
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "media-libs/mesa" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- media-libs/mesa-6.4.2-r2 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
- media-libs/mesa-6.5-r3 (masked by: package.mask, ~x86 keyword)
# Donnie Berkholz <spyderous@gentoo.org> (31 Mar 2006)
# Development release
For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

I'll re-emerge xorg :(

I'm near to finish ideas, I found this one in the web...
