I tried emerge fireifox 1.5.0.3, but when I do emerge mozilla-firefox, it wants to install 1.0.8. I tried emerge mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3, but that reported an error:

emerge mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3
Calculating dependencies

!!! 'mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3' is not a valid package atom.
!!! Please check ebuild(5) for full details.
!!! (Did you specify a version but forget to prefix with '='?)

The version of firefox you are trying to emerge in masked by the ~x86 keyword, meaning it is still considered unstable. If you want this latest version of firefox, add the line
Code:
www-client/mozilla-firefox ~x86

to your /etc/portage/package.keywords. Also, I would advise you to read the Gentoo System Documentation (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml?catid=gentoo), especially the Portage section.

dont try:
emerge mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3

but use:
emerge =mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3

the "=" is important for version numbering.

The package.keywords thing seems a bit dodgy, I can't get it to successfully unmask packages all the time.

When that happens, I just move to the directory in /usr/portage and emerge the ebuild directly.

Mind you, I rarely install unstable or beta packages.

It works perfectly, but maybe you expect it to do more than it's supposed to do. It works for packages that are masked by keyword. If they are hard-masked you need to use package.unmask.

The whole portage thing with its use flags and the package.* files is THE reason for using Gentoo. If you don't know how it works exactly, it is surely worth to have a look into it.
