I tried emerge fireifox 1.5.0.3, but when I do emerge mozilla-firefox, it wants to install 1.0.8. I tried emerge mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3, but that reported an error:
emerge mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3
Calculating dependencies
!!! 'mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3' is not a valid package atom.
!!! Please check ebuild(5) for full details.
!!! (Did you specify a version but forget to prefix with '='?) |

The version of firefox you are trying to emerge in masked by the ~x86 keyword, meaning it is still considered unstable. If you want this latest version of firefox, add the line Code: | www-client/mozilla-firefox ~x86 |
to your /etc/portage/package.keywords. Also, I would advise you to read the Gentoo System Documentation (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml?catid=gentoo), especially the Portage section. _________________ www.eff.org - www.fsf.org - www.againsttcpa.com - Video |

dont try:
emerge mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3
but use:
emerge =mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3
the "=" is important for version numbering. |

The package.keywords thing seems a bit dodgy, I can't get it to successfully unmask packages all the time.
When that happens, I just move to the directory in /usr/portage and emerge the ebuild directly.
Mind you, I rarely install unstable or beta packages. |

It works perfectly, but maybe you expect it to do more than it's supposed to do. It works for packages that are masked by keyword. If they are hard-masked you need to use package.unmask. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

The whole portage thing with its use flags and the package.* files is THE reason for using Gentoo. If you don't know how it works exactly, it is surely worth to have a look into it. _________________ www.eff.org - www.fsf.org - www.againsttcpa.com - Video |
