Posted: Mon May 01, 2006 5:27 pm Post subject: Strange disappearing text in gtk/gnome apps under KDE |
|
|
Im using KDE 3.5.2 and many gtk/gnome apps (e.g. app-office/gnucash, media-video/dvdrip or app-misc/gramps) shows their text messages only partly. For text on dialogs, it appears after moving that dialog out of display and back. Text in controls like radio buttons apears, when moving the mouse over them. Mostly, only the first letters are shown. I have no clue, what the problem is, maybe some redraw problem or some timing issues conflicting with localization... maybe...
Has anybody had the same issue or can help? These apps are not really usable in that state. |

Are you using Modular X?
Edit: If you are, together with nvidia (as opposed to nv) driver, try changing to nv in xorg.conf, or downgrade to xorg-server to 1.0.2-r3 if you're using 1.0.99.2 or higher. See this thread. |

Yes I'm using modular X but using the open source radeon dirver for my Laptop builtin Radeon 9000 Mobility.
The currently used xorg-server version is 1.0.2-r3.
Any other suggestions? |

| I've just started getting this too after a major system upgrade (410 packages!) but I'm using XFCE. I have a Radeon IGP 320M. |

| Are you using the artwiz (aleczapka) fonts by any chance? I've found that it only seems to affect some of those. Or perhaps some other very small font? All the artwiz fonts are very small. |

The artwiz fonts are installed (media-fonts/artwiz-fonts-2.4), but I don't know, if they are used be these apps. I even don't exaclty know, how I can find out, which font are used by gtk+ apps under KDE. |

| Usually that is set in the ~/.gtkrc* files but KDE might be using some trickery to override them. Can't remember. Haven't used KDE in forever. I doubt they are using artwiz if you haven't explicitly set them to though. Still, I'll try whatever font you're using. |

So, as these ~/.gtkrc* file(s) are written and configured by KDE to use the same fonts as in KDE apps, I'm using *not* the artwiz fonts but Sans Serif.
So, this problem seems to be not related to a special font.
Any other ideas? |

| Ok, I fiddled a bit around with different fonts, font sizes and themes for GTK, but always the same issue, only the first word gets displayed, the rest appears only sometimes after size changing, redrawing,... as described above. |

Thanks for finding that out. Already have an account there. I'll keep an eye on that. |
