This is somewhat related to another thread I started regarding gcc 3.4.5 causing problems, but I keep ending up with an empty world file. I can kinda re-create it by hand, but is there any way to automatically regenerate this file? Has anyone seen this happen before?

More information is in this post regarding the gcc issue that eventually leads up to the empty world file.

You may use regenworld
Code:
# regenworld --help
This script regenerates the portage world file by checking the portage
logfile for all actions that you've done in the past. It ignores any
arguments except --help. It is recommended that you make a backup of
your existing world file (var/lib/portage/world) before using this tool.

After that check with
Code:
emerge --depclean --pretend

if you're still missing something.
Finally you may want to run the dep script to remove unneeded entries.

Edit: late, but with more details :)

Thanks. Unfortunately I'm starting to think the system is to the point where it's going to need a reinstall to fix it.
