SHA256 verification failure

I'm having a somewhat unusual problem with SHA256 verification.

A number of packages eg.: rpm2targz, openmotif, MesaLib, .... and many more are failing on SHA256 verification. Searching in the forums I found that after the files are downloaded I could use "ebuild /usr/portage/pathto.ebuild digest" to create new digests and the ebuild works after that.

Unfortunately, trying to install xorg-x11 with about 100 dependencies, the emerge fails after every 4 or 5 ebuilds.

There seems to be a related entry in the gentoo bugzilla at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=131293 but is looks like it's been resolved

any ideas on what's causing the problem?
