this link
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-17676-highlight-dl360.html
if i execute ls /dev/ida/ i find a c0d0
but impossible to launch fdisk, i have an error : you will not be able to write the partition table, unable to read /dev/ida/c0d0
cpqarray mod is loaded, sym53c8xx mod is loaded (smart array controller)

What type of controller are you using?
What is the output of fdisk -l? |

You have posted the name of the module and not the name of the controller. |

I have the same exact issue.
Just this morning I started doing the gentoo install on a DL360 I recently got hold of; had a
little initial problem sorting out the dma issue w/ the cdrom drive - finally got things to boot
smoothly - and I cannot access the logical drives.
Code: |
livecd ~ # lsmod | grep cpq
cpqarray 18148 0
livecd ~ # lsmod | grep sym5
sym53c8xx 60692 0
|
Code: |
livecd ~ # ls -l /dev/ida/
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 72, 0 Mar 27 14:17 c0d0
|
Code: |
livecd ~ # fdisk -l
livecd ~ # fdisk /dev/ida/c0d0
Unable to read /dev/ida/c0d0
|
Code: |
livecd ~ # lspci

03:05.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 08)
|
I can see some suspicious issues in dmesg:
Code: |
livecd ~ # dmesg
<snippage>
sym53c8xx 0000:00:01.0: device not supported
<snippage>
sym53c416.c: Version 1.0.0-ac

cpqarray: Finding drives on ida0<4>cpqarray ida0: idaSendPciCmd Timeout out, No command list address returned!
cpqarray: error sending ID controller
cpqarray: Starting firmware's background processing
cpqarray ida0: idaSendPciCmd Timeout out, No command list address returned!
cpqarray: Unable to start background processing
<snip>
|
So, I'm getting a not supported err on the sym53c8xx module, and I'm seeing some errors w/ cpqarray - but I haven't yet figured out how I should proceed to correct or work-around these -- any help would be much appreciated! |

Ok - fun, fun, fun.
After some tedious trial-and-error; I nailed down the problem:
When using the SMART controller, DO NOT use the doscsi kernel option when booting the LiveCD.
It doesn't matter what other options I use or don't use when booting, however if doscsi is used, then the cpqarrary will not function properly and the logical drive(s) will not be probed/discovered.
When it works, you should see something along the lines of:
Code: |
livecd ~ # dmesg | less
<snip>
Compaq SMART2 Driver (v 2.6.0)
cpqarray: Device 0x10 has been found at bus 0 dev 1 func 0
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:01.0[A] -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
cpqarray: Finding drives on ida0 (Integrated Array)
cpqarray ida/c0d0: blksz=512 nr_blks=35553120
cpqarray: Starting firmware's background processing
ida/c0d0: unknown partition table
<snip>
|
and:
Code: |
livecd ~ # ls -lR /dev/ida/
/dev/ida/:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Mar 27 16:28 c0d0 -> disc0/disc
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 60 Mar 27 16:28 disc0
/dev/ida/disc0:
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 72, 0 Mar 27 16:28 disc
|
Compare that to my earlier post:
Code: |
livecd ~ # ls -l /dev/ida/
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 72, 0 Mar 27 14:17 c0d0
|
Code: |
livecd ~ # dmesg | less
<snip>
Compaq SMART2 Driver (v 2.6.0)
cpqarray: Device 0x10 has been found at bus 0 dev 1 func 0
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:01.0[A] -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
cpqarray: Finding drives on ida0<4>cpqarray ida0: idaSendPciCmd Timeout out, No command list address returned!
cpqarray: error sending ID controller
cpqarray: Starting firmware's background processing
cpqarray ida0: idaSendPciCmd Timeout out, No command list address returned!
cpqarray: Unable to start background processing
|
Now, I can do a:
Code: |
livecd ~ # fdisk /dev/ida/c0d0
|
|

This problem might have been solved for some people but I'm still having problems.
My problem doesnt seem to be with the disk array but with the Graphic installer.
It wont find any devices to partition. (Command line installer doesnt work either)
I'm using 2006-0 on a DL360 G4 with smart array 6i v2.58. The disks are 2 * 72 gb as a raid 1.
I also tested mandriva and that worked without any problems.
After booting Gentoo I had no problem mounting the disks created by mandriva.
Dmesg displays the following
HP CISS Driver (v 2.6.

I have also booted with and without doscsi but that didnt help.
Any ideas on how to get the disked partitioned?

the graphic installer will not find the device. it won't find it either if you create symlinks for the cciss devices. you have to install gentoo manually as i did |

Thanks for the tip. I got a lot further. But unfortunately not all the way.
I did as you said and did a standard stage3 install.
I first tried installing grup but couldnt get it to work so I switched to lilo.
After restarting I got a kernel panic with the following text
VFS: Cannot open root device "6803" or unknown-block(104,3)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(104,3)
My lilo.conf file looks like this
boot=/dev/cciss/c0d0
map = /boot/map
prompt
timeout=50
default=gentoo
image=/boot/kernel-2.6.15-gentoo-r1
label=gentoo
read-only
root=/dev/cciss/c0d0p3
But df -h shows this before I do the chroot
/dev/cciss/disc0/part3 66G 2.2G 64G 4% /mnt/gentoo
/dev/cciss/disc0/part1 35M 6.0M 27M 19% /mnt/gentoo/boot
/dev 1014M 168K 1014M 1% /mnt/gentoo/dev
After chroot this is whats shown:
/dev/cciss/c0d0p3 66G 2.2G 64G 4% /
/dev/cciss/c0d0p1 35M 6.0M 27M 19% /boot
udev 1014M 168K 1014M 1% /dev
It seems as if the initial boot needs /dev/cciss/disc0/part3
but I cant run lilo with root=/dev/cciss/disc0/part3.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Regards Kenneth

you should compile the cciss driver into kernel not as a module. i would recomend you to do genkernel --menuconfig all and select the cciss driver in the block devices to be compiled into kernel and then run lilo and reboot |

Thanks. That did the trick.
I didnt find any reference to cciss so I assumed you ment the CPQ array module.
Now it boots but my network wont start. It cant find eth0. I'll check it later

Tried that but it didnt work so I compiled Broadcom trigon3 inte the kernel and now it works.
Thanks for some great support
