In section 6b of the instruction manual, the instructions mention choosing a profile. I am installing on ppc arch. Must I choose a profile or can I safely skip this step. Is it reccomended to choose one? It sounds to me that by choosing a profile, I am limiting my choices concerning my make.conf file. _________________ gentoo good to be true |

the profile you choose sets which packages are considered stable, sets which USE flags work, defines virtual packages, etc, etc. Have a look at the files in /usr/portage/profiles. Most of them are plain text files. I can't say for sure, but your system will probably end up very very broken if you don't use a profile.
There is a good reason for profiles. If you choose not to set one, don't expect much help troubleshooting problems |

Hi.
After you extract your stage tarball, look at the output of the following.
Code: | # ls -l /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.profile |
If this isn't a symlink to a profile, I believe you won't be able to emerge any package. I don't have any G4 or G5, so I don't know the PPC arch, but I believe there's at least the PPC and the PPC64 profiles. You should read the Gentoo Handbook. _________________ Jorge.
