well... for background information, check here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-453962-highlight-.html
although i believe there is little of use in that thread for this problem.

as the subject indicates, i attempted to move from xorg-x11-6.8.2 to the latest modular X. the ebuild for xorg-server was failing to compile. i uninstalled the millions of packages that come with the modular X install, then reinstalled xorg-6.8.2.

here is my xorg.conf, shortened for friendliness:

it may also be worthy to mention that rounded corners are now broken in fluxbox... ? as for the fonts, i am not particularly worried about that at the moment.

so anyway, i'm left to ponder exactly what is broken here. as far as i can tell, the system is the same as it was before the attempt to go modular. apparently there is something that i removed from the system in the interim that hasbroken this, however no dependancies are being pulled in when i re-emerge the nvidia drivers or xorg-x11. the message:
Code:
Symbol __glXgetActiveScreen from module /usr/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!
seems to suggest that a library is missing or broken, no? equery suggests that file belongs to xorg-x11, which compiles without complaint. revdep-rebuild finds nothing wrong. this problem persists with the latest unstable nvidia drivers as well.

so what do i do now?

--edit--
out of curiousity, i just tried to play an mpeg too. that is also hosed, mplayer indicating it could not open the selected video output device.

??

If you're using the nvidia binary driver, you don't use dri, comment it out in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

what?!

this has been my xorg.conf for over two years, i've been loading dri without issues for that long and this has never happened.

so i just commented it out, and attempted to start another session with the following results:

so not loading dri completely breaks X. at least if i leave it uncommented it startx, but without much functionality. i'd like to get to the bottom of this...

update: so now while `emerge -ev xorg-x11` is at 77 out of 82 packages (in the middle of xorg-x11) i can no longer startx with dri commented or uncommented. the errors are the same as listed above...

X is completely hosed. i've done all the basic stuff, this is a total snafu. i apparently really broke it this time...

help.

The thing that I think is wrong is, in your Xorg output I see the message:

Quote:
X Window System Version 6.8.2

when, on my system (where I built a modular X) it says:

Quote:
X Window System Version 7.0.0

Did you uninstall X prior to reinstalling modular X? There is some doc at

http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/modular-x-howto.xml#doc_chap1_sect1

that talks about this.

Hope this helps.

i think you misunderstand. i tried moving to modular, it wouldn't build. now i re-emerged xorg 6.8. it's broken. hence the subject: attempted move to modular...

i need to know what libraries are missing or broken that result in this behavior. also, why the odd dri behavior?

For starters, you're starting X two differnet ways. One is grabbing its config from /etc/X11/xorg.conf and the other from /root/xorg.conf.

So the changes you made aren't even being used. You have to be consistent in how you are trying to start X.

The output shows it is still trying to load the dri module, which you said was commented out, so I would say you aren't changing the right one.

Edit: Also, is the symbolic link /usr/src/linux correctly pointing to the kernel source you are using. If not the proper nvidia module will not be created.

ok, that's correct - root has a copy of xorg.conf in ~/, so those results are screwy. however, when run as a user, with the /etc/X11/xorg.conf with dri loading and with it commented out, i get errors.

i have now managed to get X to start again after re-emerging it and all dependancies, however still have no glx.

as a user, with dri commented out
Code:
[ pwhitt@neptune 12:52PM ]~$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf |grep dri
#       Load    "dri"
i get the following output aftr issuing a startx:

What is the output of:
Code:
find /lib/modules/2.6.* -name nvidia.ko -print

Are you sure you removed the old nvidia kernel module and reloaded the newly built one before starting X again?

Edit: Its getting hard to follow the thread when you keep posting those long outputs. Try to remove some of the non-important parts that haven't changed or seem OK.

Edit 2: These might help get rid of the first three errors:
Code:
mkdir /tmp/.ICE-unix
chmod 1777 /tmp/.ICE-unix

as root.

Do you have any IPv6 stuff in your kernel?
Any IPv6 entries in your /etc/resolv.conf file?

thanks headrush. i removed much of the extraneous details and the last log. i would rather not post logs unless requested, but i've seen quite a few people request logs... just wanted to be safe.

as for the results of your suggestions:
Code:
neptune ~ # find /lib/modules/2.6.15-gentoo-r1 -name nvidia.ko -print
/lib/modules/2.6.15-gentoo-r1/video/nvidia.ko
neptune ~ # uname -r
2.6.15-gentoo-r1
neptune ~ # ls -aol /usr/src/linux
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root 22 Apr 16 09:25 /usr/src/linux -> linux-2.6.15-gentoo-r1/

i did not emerge -C the old kernel, but i never have in the past either and it wasn't a problem. i did however rmmod the old module, then modprobe the new module between emerges - of course with X not running. i'll give and emerge -C a shot and see what it does.

/tmp/.ICE-unix existed and i chmoded it before checking the permissioons. i'm also not too concerned with the ipv6 stuff, as i don't think it's causing this problem, and i haven't recompiled the kernel in over a month. glx was working very well with the latest stable nvidia modules and my xorg.conf as originally posted. i've been playing around with xfs trying to get it to run and attemptnig to get antialiased fonts, hence the attempt to go modular - seeing if it would solve any of my problems.
Code:
neptune ~ # grep IPV /usr/src/linux/.config
# CONFIG_IPV6 is not set
neptune ~ # cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by dhcpcd for interface eth0
domain chn.comcast.net
nameserver 192.168.0.1
neptune ~ #

--edit
so after emerge -Cing the old nvidia drivers and re emerging the new, still no dice.

--edit 2
cut the font directory lines from the posted logs to make things more eye-friendly

ok... i'm about to give up.

i just emerge -Ced all X related packages, nivida-kernel and nvidia-glx. i then rebooted just for the hell of it, then re-emerged xorg-x11 and nvidia-kernel/glx.

i then started X, ran glxinfo, and see that there is in fact, no glx.

wtf? this tremendously sucks.

What is the output of:
Code:
ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx*
ls -l /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/extensions/libglx*

Edit: You can remove those incorrect USE flags at the end of USE= section in /etc/make.conf
(The ones you though you needed with xorg-x11-7.x)

Edit 2: I was looking at some of your past posts and it seems you've had unknown symbols problems with agp Since Mar 1.
I just want to clarify some things: You are on an amd64, but you are running your system in 32bit mode?

yo headrush, thanks for the assist.

here is the code:
Code:
neptune ~ # ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 46 Apr 16 20:09 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.a -> //usr//lib/opengl/xorg-x11/extensions/libglx.a
neptune ~ # ls -l /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/extensions/libglx*
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 490100 Apr 16 20:08 /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/extensions/libglx.a

which incorrect use flags were you thinking of?

and yes, i'm running an amd64 processor, bit 32-bit install. that shouldn't effect this, should it?

i'm honestly totally lost here. i have in the last two or three days, rebuilt this system from the ground up as far as i can tell regarding X, and yet glx is still completely borked. i've tried everything in the book, and then some brute force tactics which are not in the book. i'm lost.

I don't see the libglx.so library. Here is the output of mine:
Code:

and see the permissions are different too.

The following in USE= section of /etc/make.conf:
Code:
input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse kernel_linux video_cards_nvidia video_cards_vesa video_cards_fbdev

I'm on the modular X now, so its hard for me to check the older stuff, but what is the output of
Code:
emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx -pv

my libglx.so is in /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/extensions/. just to check, i created a link in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/ pointing to it, no dice. so now:
Code:
neptune extensions # ls -aol
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 root 4096 Apr 17 05:07 ./
drwxr-xr-x 3 root 4096 Apr 15 08:51 ../
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root   46 Apr 16 22:57 libglx.a -> //usr//lib/opengl/xorg-x11/extensions/libglx.a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root   43 Apr 17 05:07 libglx.so -> /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so*

i think the permissions are different because they are links. the permissions of both files are now -rwxr-xr-x. libglx.a was -r--r--r--, but i just changed it to see if there'd be any effect - nope.

and lastly:
Code:
neptune extensions # emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx -pv

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.8756  0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.8756  USE="-dlloader" 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB

i also tried rebuilding the world with +dlloader just for the hell of it, that didn't do it either. right now X and nvidia-glx are built -dlloader. and still the same apparent contradiction, when i startx:
Code:
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module.  If
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     you continue to encounter problems, Please try
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

and when i look at the log, the only relevant thng i see is:
Code:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module.  If
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     you continue to encounter problems, Please try
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

which of course offers very little insight into the problem. i litterally emerge -Ced xorg-x11, all X related libs i could find, all nvidia*, almost all applications, recompiled the kernel and rebooted without the nvidia module loaded. i then recompiled xorg-x11-6.8 and nvidia-kernel and glx, started x and still have no glx.

this is way screwy.

--edit
OK, so now i suspect there is something left behind from the xorg-x11 install that is breaking glx. after having a cup of coffee, i rebooted. overnight i left the machine running `emerge -e world` - which rebuilt all packages on the system, all 271 of them. i then, just for the hell of it, re-emerged nvidia-kernel and glx; rebooted; started X, and again witnessed the spectacular failure of glx.

I have this libglx.so also in addition to the other one.

Barfo, don't take this personal, but you keep changing things and recompiling this and that on a whim that it really makes it next to impossible to analytically track this issue you down. I know it frustrating when it doesn't work, but trying to diagnose a moving target is a pain.

sorry if it looks like a monkey has been beating on the pc with a stick... i've always been pretty sloppy when it comes to the scientific method. and i appreciate your time and effort, i'm not trying to make it difficult.

but this is especially frustrating because i've removed any package that should have anything at all to do with glx and then re-emerged them - etc-updating whenever prompted to. at least i *think* i've removed any packages that have anything to do with glx. also, revdep-rebuild is finding nothing wrong and an emerge -ev world had no effect at all. i am really quite surprised.

i've been quite good however about reverting to previous conditions when making changes. right now it's pretty vanilla, the libs i chmodded and the link i placed are back to the way they were originally.

before i left for the office i went down the list and uninstalled every xorg-*/* package and ran revdep-rebuild. somehow it pulled in some gnome dependancies that i had never seen before, and a list of packages quite long. maybe it will result in much glx love. if it doesn't, i'm completely stumped.

can you suggest any libraries or packages from the modular xorg install that if somehow left lingering behind would do this? i removed all packages that were blocking xorg-x11-6.8, however it seems like something is clearly breaking it. what else might it be?

--edit
so, in reference to your extra lib, could you run an equery on that to see which packages provides them? also, is it certain that the ebuild will replace ALL files when re-emerging an already installed package? it would seem horribly flawed if it didn't, but i haven't looked at any file timestamps, so that may be my problem.

update...

so last night i emerge --depcleaned my system, removing everything but the kernel, compiler and portage - basically wiping the slate clean. i then did another emerge -ev xorg-x11 and left it to compile over night.

this morning before leaving for work, i re-emerged nvidia-kernel and glx, eselected opengl nvidia, then started x and ran glxinfo. i was not surprised to see that glx was in fact still missing from the display.

what the *expletive* is doing this? i'm still getting the exact same messages in the startx output and xorg.log. i also noticed that in my /etc/ld.so.conf, the second entry is strage looking, //usr//lib/blah blah, instead of like the others, /usr/lib/blah blah. i would post the exact output, but after depcleaning my system, dhcp was also nuked. when i get back home i'll reinstall that and post more detailed information, but in the meantime - is there a known method by which liraries may become permanantly hosed?

ok, another update.

the versions i installed (--emptytree) this morning were xorg-x11-6.8.2-r6, nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111-r3 and nvidia-glx-1.0.6111-r3. i also tried the latest unstable nvidia drivers, 8756.

i'm about to toss my hdd in the microwave to see if that fixes it.

i've searched the forms and have seen that a lot of amd64 userrs are having similar problems with libraries being screwy after some updates. does anyone out there have any idea why this would have happened to my system, and how i can revert to the good old days when it worked?

i'm debating whether or not to try going with modular xorg again, seeing as that is how this all happened. although i cannot imagine what might have happened that couldn't be undone. the only thing left that i can tink of is unrolling a stage three tarball and rebuilding from that. i'd rather not go that low, althought with the time i've spent trying to fix this i may as well have.

jesus, that's what i get for messing with it when it wasn't broken. i mean, all i had were some ugly fonts. no i don't have video or glx. good god.

Gonna give you some hints step by step be sure to check them

First of all set the following option in /etc/make.conf:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse"
VIDEO_CARDS="nv nvidia vesa"

Secondly set the USE flag dlloader to enabled as the ELF loader doesn't work in xorg-x11-7.0 as far as I am aware.
USE="dlloader" (Might need to set -dri too for nvidia drivers, not sure of that)

Third of all, make a symlink from: /usr/lib/xorg/modules to: /usr/lib/modules
That should resolve any problems you might have with drivers not loading

As fourth do the following
unmerge -Ca xorg-x11
rm -rf /usr/lib/modules
rm -rf /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11
rm -rf /usr/lib/libGL*

Also make sure /usr/X11R6 is symlink to ../usr. If it's not, delete the directory and create a symlink

Then finally, emerge xorg-x11-7.0, nvidia-drivers and nvidia-glx

Afterwards be sure to run etc-update, env-update and source /etc/profile or you might have problems causing X to crash about an RGB error.

If GLX doesn't work, don't panic but try the following options:
eselect opengl set nvidia

Hopefully that solves your problem

thanks for the input olger901.

so after my last post, i again depcleaned the world, rebooted, env-updated and ldconfigged, emerge xorg-x11-6.8, eselect-opengl, eselect, the drivers and blah blah, the whole deal. again, glx was broken however any ldconfig -p would list the libraries needed by things like mplayer. xorg would still give identical error output as above.

i gave up and went back to the modular xorg attempt. surprisingly this time xorg-server compiled without failing. i can only assume that betwen modular xorg and xorg-6.8/9 the libraries of some critical part of my system were hosed. as deepcleaning the world didn't fix it, it must have been hiding out in my system, however i have no idea what it was.

anyway, my X is back with glx - only i did it without the dlloader flag before reading this. so far everything seems harmonious.

well, i don't think the problem i was having is solved. i never did get xorg-x11 6.8 to work - that was my goal. i wouldn't advise anyone to do what i did in case they are having similar problems. wouldn't it be misleading to add [solved]?

No it wouldn't if you consider your problem solved, it's solved, otherwise it's not.

The problem is unresolved since the OG poster used an alternative (switching to modular xorg) instead of fixing, or not fixing it. In other words, this isn't a binary situation.

In any event,
TTT!
I'm having these same problems aftering upgrading to modular xorg, then down grading back to stable... and I have no clue as to why. When I downgraded from xorg-7.0 I was still in X, and even if I restarted X it still recognized the nvidia modules, however after a reboot it doesn't, even though lsmod shows nvidia. I'll add more in a bit...

Edit-I think I've got it. The modular xorg sticks stuff (drivers ;)) that was in /usr/lib/modules in /usr/lib/xorg/modules, and when we upgrade to modular xorg and recompile our nvidia drivers, the installer notices this change and sticks the nvidia driver in /usr/lib/xorg/modules. However, if we downgrade, the drivers are still stuck in /usr/lib/xorg/modules, while our version of xorg is looking for stuff is /usr/lib/modules, and the nvidia installer still sticks stuff in the /usr/lib/xorg/modules. I copied /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers to /usr/lib/modules/drivers and X started up. Another problem is nvidia can't find glx since that doesn't get loaded, but at least X works. :)

Does anyone have any ideas on how to *actually* fix this problem?
