Hi guys,
I just made my first kernel (2.6.17-gentoo-r8, Athlon 64 system) using the doc. When I booted it there was no internet connection. I ran ifconfig and my network interface was not listed there. Also at the KDE startup i was told that there is a problem with ALSA. Here is a "screenshot" from menuconfig:

My question is: Is there anything that I did obviously wrong?
BTW (I just realized that when there was no internet conection): I cannot find the "IP" command on my gentoo system, just ifconfig. Does anyone know what I need to emerge to get it?
Thanks, Jack |

You need to configure the driver for your Ethernet card Code: | Device Drivers --->
Network device support --->
[*] Network device support
Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit) --->
Ethernet (1000 Mbit) ---> | Go into the appropriate section (10 or 100Mbit) or (1000 Mbit) and select the driver. If you are not sure, the Help will guide you.
For Sound, you don't need the Open Sound system, deselect it and the Intel driver. Go into "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture" and select the driver for your system (Intel ICH it seems) under "PCI devices" _________________ The avatar is jorma, a "duck" from "Elephants Dream": the film and all the production materials have been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License, see orange.blender.org for details. |

Thx for your reply wynn. I got the network interface (Marvell 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller) working now by using the "New SysKonnect GigaEthernet support" (SKGE) in -> Device Drivers -> Network device support -> Ethernet (1000 Mbit). Thanks a lot for your advice!
The sound is still not working: When I start KDE I get the message
Quote: | Informational - artsmessage
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device. |
It is an onboard soundchip on my ASUS K8V SE Delux (00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60) accoring to lspci). And I chose these options:
Sound -> Sound card support built-in
Sound -> no OOS
Sound -> ALSA built-in
Sound -> ALSA -> Support old ALSA API built-in
Sound -> ALSA -> Verbose procfs contents built-in
Sound -> ALSA -> PCI devices -> Intel/SiS/nVidia/AMD/ALi AC97 Controller built-in
I selected Sound & MM -> Sound System -> Hardware -> Audio device: ALSA in the KDE Control Center.
Thanks again,
Jack |

alsaconf tells me that
Quote: | No supported PnP or PCI card found.
Would you like to proble legacy ISA sound cards/chips? |
I said no since the soundchip wouldn't be listed when calling lspci if it was an ISA chip.
That's why I think it is a kernel issue and I messed something up with the kernel configuration. But I am happy for any hint, thx guys!

Your using the wrong sound card driver
<*> VIA 82C686A/B, 8233/8235 AC97 Controller (NEW)
Is the right one, this is in 2.6.18

What do you get when you run
Code: | lspci -v | grep -i audio |
Here is what mine looks like:
Code: | 00:0c.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 04)
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)
|
I just made sure there was support for the Audigy compiled into my kernel. |

Hi guys,
thanks for the hint Suicidal_Orange. I recompiled and the KDE error-message didn't appear. However alsaconf still complains that it doesn't find a PnP or PCI card.
@phuqmnb: mine says 00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60) |
