error by emerge -up world

Hi!

I've run into the following problem:
emerge -up world but also emere -u world
does not behave as it should, but tells me that: all ebuilds that could satisfy "virtual/glibc" have been masked

this same error is produced emidiately by a few ebuilds, after which emerge quits. However the ebuilds do compile without problems.

glibc won't work and if i try emerging the newest ebuild, it tells me it is unable to emerge gcc 3.2 which is again unable to emerge binutils.

I'm currently still running a 2.95 enviroment on a p4m-1.8ghz and actually don't wont to upgrade to 3.2 if it is possible.

Any ideas?
