Telemarketing has provided thousands of jobs. I've never done that (well, almost) and hate telemarketing but I understand why they would choose such a job and I would if i'd be in deep shit.

But non-profit and political organizations can still call. So I'm on the list but I still get bugged by people wanting money

Tip: Next time the telemarketing chaps call, have some fun with them. Here are two completely true examples that I've done.

1. I was playing NCAA Football 2002 when the phone rings. It's MCI, calling about their "The Neighborhood Build by MCI" calling plan. The woman had interrupted my game, so I decided to have some fun with her.

She ran down the features in a loud, hurried voice, and I decided to play dumb. "Well, I make a lot of calls to Uzbekistan" (that's my favorite-sounding country), I said. "Are those included?" Of course they weren't, but they had a bang-up feature set that I was sure to love! It included X, Y, and Z, and the pick of one of alpha or beta. "So, I get X, and Y, and I get beta?" No, that's wrong, she said. This went on in various combinations for a while, until she finally said I could find out more at "wwwmci.com" (sic).

She kept saying that MCI built the neighborhood, until I told her that no, we had contractors build our house, and I was sure that our neighbors did likewise.

That was one fun call. :D

2. I have a separate line from my father, but on one particular day I answered his phone. It was the usual opening line, "Can I speak to the person who handles the telephone bill?" I politely told them that no, he wasn't home, and they should call back later. They did, and I answered. "Can I speak to the person who handles the telephone bill?" asked the woman.

I replied, "No, we don't have a telephone," in the most serious voice imaginable. Having worked as a telemarketer of sorts (at my college, calling alumni for donations), I know that if it's not on their "rebuttal card" they have to think for themselves!

She stammered, "You...don't...have a telephone?" No, I responded, in the affirmative. "Then how did you answer my call?"

Simple. "With my magic crystal ball!" That ended that, and they didn't call back for months.

I have one method of handling the phone-droids:
- Are you beeing paid per sale?
- Yes
- If you want to make money, call someone else.

Tom Mabe has some hilarious CD's for sale with his responses to telemarketers. Absolutly brilliant.

Quote:
Finally, he had enough. He decided to mess with the minds of the people who would call trying to sell him carpet cleaning services. "What is your fee for removing human blood stains?"

Generally the telemarketers here seem to use the phone book. I am listed in the book as my first initial and my last name. Pretty annoying when they call and ask for my first initial last name, I usually sob and say that person passed away three days ago. I have only had one attempt to sell me magazines anyways

What exactly is a "real job"? Some people don't have the privelage to pickand choose here. Some people just have to take what they can get. I've been a telemarketer before and it seemed like a real job to me. Having to deal with unnecesarily abusive people all day isnt that fun. Having fun with a telemarketer is alright, but being downright hostile is just un called for.

I couldn't agree more; I've never been a telemarketer, and I don't mind messing with them, but it's just not right to be mean to them -- they're just trying to make a buck. Have fun with them, but don't waste their time.

They never called again. All hail to loud stereo systems and .wav's off of Pulp Fiction!

I had a woman call me recently trying to sell conservatories.

her "Hello, I'm calling on behalf of ABC conservatories. May I ask if you have a conservatory?"
Me "Yes you may"
Her "..........do you have a conservatoy"
Me "yes"
Her "Is it in good condition"
Me "Yes it fine."
Her "Would you like another one?"
Me "where am i gonna put it? On the roof?"

This is how to stop telemarketers from calling:

1. Go to The Direct Marketer's Association webpage on removing yourself from telemarketer's lists. Print out the form, fill it out, and mail it in. You could fill out the online form, but that costs $5.

2. Every time a telemarketer calls, be sure to say "Put me on your do-not-call list." You MUST say this. Hanging up, swearing, or messing with their minds will not work. When you asked to be placed on a do-not-call list, not only does your number not get called by the company you talked to, but your number gets passed around as a do-not-call number. Remember, it costs telemarketers money to call you up, so they have an incentive to not call people who don't want to be called at home.

Be patient. The calls will decrease in frequency over the next few months, until they blissfully stop.

The problem with the phone gadgets that detect autodialers is that they do not prevent the telemarketer from calling you in the first place, which is what you want. Plus, they cost more than a stamp.

Does this plan really work? All I can say is that my number is listed, I do not have caller ID, and no telemarketers ever call me.

Poor telemarketers. My dad used to write telemarketing software, I've meet a few people in the business. Most of them hate calling as much as you hate them calling, but it's their job.

The key words when talking to a telemarketer:

"Please just mark me as a refusal and put me on your no call list."

No call list is key.

I hate Telemarketers :x . They sit there and ANNOY people for 8 hours a day, so they get no sympathy from me. I feel they deserve whatever verbal bashing/harassment they get over the phone. :P

Okay, all we need to do is build a really big spaceship - say, enough to hold all of the human race's telemarketers, phone sanitizers, and so on. Now all we need to do is make up this story about a great star goat that's going to come and gobble up the planet, tell the marketers/sanitizers/etc. that we've built three ships to flee the planet and that they get to go on the 'B' ship. Since that ships the first one finished, they can go first...

Which I guess would make another decent poll:
How much of the Guide have you read?
x Douglas Who?
x Just the first book/first two books
x The first three/four books
x I'm a masochist who even read Mostly Harmless
x My name is Zaphod - I mean Eddie

That would be Douglas Adams, Doctor Who was a different British Sci-Fi....

Oh.

Nevermind.

Ok being a telemarkerter (sota, I asked people to take a survey btw which they still can call you even if your on the do not call list) I would love it when people did crazy things to me. Trust me calling for 8 hours stright SUCKS!! The only time I hated it was when people startd screaming at me ect.

See I control if the company calls you back or not and what time they might. So never piss the person your talking to off. Tust me unless you would like to be called at 6am Saturday and 7am Sunday ;)

(btw I only lasted 3 weeks that job sucked!)

Sic.
I guess you have never been interrupted by one of your 'croonies'?
Why is it that a company feel they can call my private phone in order to try to sell something? I have never, ever asked any company, not given them the Ok to call me and sell me shit. If I want to buy something, I take the initative. I would never buy something just because a lunatic calls me and try to get me to buy some crap, because most of it is just that, crap.

If you can't hack it as a telemarketeer that people are abusive against you, find something else to do. You go into the job and KNOW that you are calling people uninvited. Then also expect people to be rude to you.

From now on, I'm going to as abusive as possible to any telemarketer that calls me.

Why do you think people hate your line of work so much?

And as for 'not beeing able to get another job', I don't buy that. There is ALWAYS other opportunities.

There should be a cash prize for each telemarketeer you drive out of business!

I have to agree. My sister worked briefly as a telemarketer but was well aware of the way she was going to be treated.

I think telemarketing should be illegal. I don't like being interupted during dinner or at 8:45 at night for a marketing gimmick. If I want something I shop for it!
