hehe, RPMs are absolutely "pristine author's sources" that's one of RPM's principles, any patch are included in and applied at build time but they are always author's sources. also rpm has a "PROVIDES" field which might work nicely with USE flags _________________ Press F1 for Help. |

I will never again read news on April 1st. Microsoft buys Linux, that was an obvious one, but Portage going rpm!?! I was confused since Gentoo is source based.
I got this news from the Linux Today Newsletter which links you directly to the GWN, which in turn throw you that very solonely. I tought "Oh no, I'm gonna have to learn how to cast spells".
Glad it's only a joke, but I did not found it particularly of good taste. At least, some did. I guess it's too much emotions for me. _________________ (7 of 9) Installing star-trek/species-8.4.7.2::talax. |

I had at least two heart attacks in 2 minutes with this joke.
I said profanies about Gentoo to all my friends, I was ready to flame some serious developer asses... until I reread the date of the newsletter. Then I felt stupid.
That's the best April's Fool I read yesterday. I hope this nightmare won't happen for real someday. Portages rules. |

According to rumors among certain gentoo insiders, even portage is going to be replaced
with a highly customized version of InstallShield, which runs perfectly on WINE. |

Pfffffff
First thing I did after escaping Code: | # emerge --nomercy unmerge gentoo |
was to go to this forum... indeed, my heart missed a few beats, since on this 2nd of April I wasn't at my "qui vive" anymore
Anyway, good joke _________________ Cheers

I was fully prepared for any major April Fools jokes on April 1st. But then, I was helping my best friend move into his new flat all of Aptil 1st, and I never got around to reading my E-Mail...
Date: April 2nd
Time: 8pm
Place: Comfy chair infront of best linux distro out there
Activity: Reading GWN Newsletter
Quote: | "Portage 2.1 will be using RPM" |
5 secs...
another 10 secs
Was already trying to figure out how to make my own source based distro, so I decide to read my /. Newsletter... See the same news there, so I figure it's gotta be real...
Switch to open shell window...
Code: | cat /dev/urandom > /dev/hda |
Just then, I realized this has gotta be a joke... The "evil" bit thing on TCP/IP had caught my eye, and I started reading the comments...
Guess I won't be running that command afterall
Really brilliant April Fools joke Gentoo |

Can't believe how a piece of news like this could send me into action so quickly.
Well, now at least I'm registered with the forums.
If it's true that LSB requires RPM, it might not be a bad thing to wedge an RPM option into the mix, but never give up ebuilds and portage. It is an amazingly unique selling point for Gentoo.

Whew. As I read this, my mind started racing, planning a fork of Gentoo. Thank god it's a prank. I really hate running huge projects.

A friend of mine works for the Purdue Exponent and wrote an editorial on April Fools jokes that summarizes my opinion of them pretty well. I love a good April Fools joke. I also love a good geek joke. The GWN was the best of both worlds. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

Well if it was a joke it had me too
However I am still not entirely sure it is a joke, I remeber reading somewhere in a previous GWN about Gentoo and LSB, and striving to reach the standars, if you check out LSB site it states something about RPMS there, I didn't read itall because it bored me half way through, why cant they make these sites a bit more interesting ?
Maybe it is a clever ploy by Gentoo to judge users reactions and gauge the way forward from that ?
Who knows, if it goes to RPM we can spend many a wasted hour fixing dependency nightmares |

Well it definitely flashed a bunch of emotions across me in a hurry. I hope it was just a joke . I'm glad I checked the forums because I was still wondering what to do next, I have also made the Redhat -> Bluehat ->Gentoo journey and I like Gentoo as it is . _________________ Windows is not a virus: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature. |

RedHat->BlueHat->Gentoo? After RedHat, I avoided RPM based distro's totally...my route was RedHat->Slackware->Debian->Gentoo...my heart also faded fast when I heard about RPM...glad it's not real. |
