what's all this fuss ?

Is the Gentoo Project in trouble? Recently, signs of dissatisfaction with the way things are done at Gentoo have started appearing with increasing regularity. Jochen Maes in Leaving Gentoo: "Today I resigned from my beloved project Gentoo." The author quotes lack of respect and trust from other Gentoo developers, ongoing power struggles, and frequent signs of disregarding Gentoo policies as the main reasons for his decision. Joshua Jackson in State of affairs: "...the fact that working on Gentoo has not been as much fun as it has in the past has made me consider retiring." The author also reveals that a growing number of Gentoo developers now consider leaving the project. What's going on? Are these examples just isolated incidents or is the popular source-based distribution going through the toughest period in its existence? Just the random fuss that appears every once in a while.
One of the devs, kloeri, made a blog post about it: http://kloeri.livejournal.com/1305.html

This week's special is SeJo, known in real life as Jochen Maes, one of our Belgian developers (living in Leuven at the moment). He fills many roles in Gentoo: Developer relations, Gentoo/Java recruiter, Java/PPC lead, GLSA padawan, PPC security liaison (together with hansmi). His Gentoo-work is, obviously, recruiting, drafting GLSA, working on Java ebuilds, stable marking security bugs and general bugsquatting. Asked what he considers to be the biggest OpenSource Project that lives, he points to himself -- albeit that statement leaves his audience wondering under what conditions the source code is made available.

Shame for him to go though. Will the project be hindered much by his leaving?

It must be that graphical installer that's got everyone upset.

The report is a bit exagerated. While there are more people leaving/complaining the explanation is rather simple:
more people total => more people being disappointed => more people complaining/leaving

they stated one member by fact. oh no! a developer! what are we going to do?!?!? its the end of larry as we know it!
sounds like this ONE developer thought a lot about himself, if he thinks himself leaving is gonna ruin gentoo. someone needs to pop his ego.
i have faith.
GENTOO FOREVER!

Actually, sejo didn't leave. He thought about it and decided to stay. And I'm very glad he did, he is a very good asset to the Gentoo Community.

Of course not, no one developer is that important (well, maybe vapier) but to see any of those ones leave is always sad. Especially when it's someone you know first hand is commiting a lot of their personal time and doing such an excellent job.

Naturally of course, as with all media I was quoted in part of what the entire musings were about. Oh well, what can I do *shrugs*. Gentoo will continue as long as people in the community care enough to take it up and work on it.
