i am having a very similar problem except that i have just got done setting up gentoo and xorg and am trying to install kde using:
emerge -av kdebase-startkde (have already unmasked kde-3.5.2)
and am getting this error:
[blocks B ] virtual/ghostscript (is blocking app-text/ghostscript-gnu-8.16-r1)

i tried using USE="-cups" as suggested in another thread but it has not helped. i doubt i would want it to even if it had worked since i am not sure of the ramifications of compliling kde without cups support. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Joseph

I'm having the same problem when I try to emerge gnome. Doing -cups has no effect for me.

Just checked your bug. Its been marked as RESOLVED NEED INFO. I think I might have a lead though. The ebuild were having a conflict with is showing up as virtual/ghostscript-0 when using emerge -p

here too. i haven't tried the last suggestion yet becuase i grabbed a portage snapshot from a couple days ago (03/30) and then emerged =kdebase-startkde-3.5.2 and it seems to be working fine now, although i will admit i have no idea what kind of ill effects this will have on the system (if any?). last note in the bug seems to be reasonable "The next sync will remvoe the PROVIDE line in the ghsotscript-* ebuild which
presumeable caused this.". so i guess if i nuked this install ill wait until portage-20060402 is available/

Same problem here. . . i'm a total n00b when it comes to linux, even though i ran gentoo a few years ago successfully. Was really hoping to have it up and running soon but as i try to # emerge kde i get a block by virtual/ghostscript. . . . typically i would just try an # emerge --unmerge ghostscript but then my system tells me that there it doesn't exist. . . like i said i'm a total n00b and at a total loss of what to do, any help would be appreciated.

Same problem here also. New install and no way to clean out "old" stuff. What can I do?

Greetings

I can verify that as of a few hours ago, the ebuild was patched, so doing an "emerge --sync" and then "emerge kde" works.

EDIT: It still fails on ghostscript, just doesn't get blocked. I have now emerged cups first, and had to put in a "-cups" flag to finish out KDE install.

I'm having a problem that I think might be related.

When I run "emerge --sync", it gives me this error:

!!! Cannot resolve a virtual package name to an ebuild.
!!! This is a bug, please report it. (virtual/ghostscript-0)

It didn't do this last night. Could that be because of the patch this morning?

I too have this problem, I can't install kde3.5 because ghostscript-gnu is not compiling properly if the cups use flag is present. I'm trying without it.

I don't have the CUPS flag present, but it still gives me that error when I try to build KDE. (Just tried.)

It won't even let me sync.

Similar here - I'm emerging various ebuilds that depend on ghostscript and ghostscript compiling exits with the comment
Code:
!!! ERROR: app-text/ghostscript-gnu-8.16-r1 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 90, Exitcode 2
Looks like have to wait until this is fixed...

I am a newbie and having the same problem:
ERROR: app-text/ghostscript-gnu-8.16-r1 failed.
Function src_compile, Line 90, Exit code 2
Make failed.

I just did
emerge --resume --skipfirst
which skips the first package on the resume list. I think it is going ok. ..it is chugging along on my ancient laptop :)

I have the same problem, and syncing didn't help any. I added -cups to my USE and it seems to be going along without any problem now.

All OK but I'm just emerging CUPS because I want to set up a print (and http) server. So neither "skipfirst" nor "-cups" would do it for me...
