I've had a problem for a while that the backups I ran over Samba always failed if the files were > 2gig. I had always thought this was a Samba issue, but now I think it might be a kernel issue. I ran across this site:
http://www.ps.uni-sb.de/~errror/smbfs-lfs.html
which talks about the fact that smbfs will not support large files by default. Has anyone else run across this problem? Is Gentoo setup to deal with large files by default or with a USE flag? |

Not sure but I experienced this problem with SMB on RH as well as SSH and FTP. I was doing the same thing as you, backups across the network. I tried everything, NFS, SSH, Samba, and FTP. There was always something and most of the time it crapped out right at 2GB .
Based on that, I'd say it is a kernel issue. Regardless of the reason 2+GB files can't be transferred. In my scripts I resorted to using the 'split' command against the tar file.
This is especially nice because you can set the size of each split piece... which I set to 700MB, perfect for the occasional off-site copy.
Perhaps you already know about 'split' if not 'man split' should give you what you need to get started. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I knew about split, but the problem is that I'm using flexbackup, which I really like, but currently doesn't support split. I guess I'll have to just use a shell script to handle backups.[/url] |
