Suddenly I can no longer get sound from my laptop.
Everything was working and I can't think what changes i might have made to break it.
Here are the details of my system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This may sound obvious, but did you (re)complie your kernel after installing alsa-driver? If so, you need to recompile alsa-driver and modules-update. Well, this is as long as you use user space dirver. If you use kernel driver, check your kernel config to see if you might have removed something. _________________ p3k4

I have exactly the same problem. My sound just stopped working.
I tried a livecd and it worked fine...
I did get some sound when I tried a different kernel but that has also suddenly stopped working! _________________ Error #152 - Windows not found: (C)heer (P)arty (D)ance. |

Any error messages when it boots, or in the log? |

No error messages. I am sure that I have followed the ALSA set up correctly and unmuted all the channels.
I suspect that the problem is with some new package I installed
Here is the recent entries in the emerge.log. The later entries are me trying to fix things.

I am recently reinstalling Gentoo on my TV box, and I've got the same sound card (only Rev 01) and I cant seem to get sound working at all. No errors or anything, just no audio output.
Alsamixer shows a secondary "Analog AD1981" name, but other than that, everything seems completely normal. I'm using Gentoo-sources. Perhaps some code in the newer kernel sources got broken? I see there are some more ppl having this same issue. |

I also have the axact same problem on my laptop, similar soundcard:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)
The last thing i did before going to work yesterday was watching a movie with sound working perfectly, when I came home there was no sound. AFAIK nothing has changed....
[SOLVED]: I just found out that the volume keys on the laptop work, I've always assumed these where win only and never bothered to try to make them work in linux....

A working configuration is gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r7 with ALSA compiled into the kernel. If that fails, it probably is due to an external package. |

My sound is working again. I'm not sure why but I recompiled the ALSA-HEADERS package. This might have been the problem. _________________ In the long run we are all dead - Keynes |
