In the 2006 GUI installer, every time it tries to install a bootloader it fails, no matter what. The installer works fine up until that point.

what is the contents of your /boot/grub/devices.map

I had a problem with installation of the boot loader because my devices.map had reference to my floppy drive. Since there was no medium in the floppy drive, the installer failed. I resolved this issue by removing the reference to the floppy drive and it installed without a problem after that
