I've compiled xorg 7 modular and made i810 driver from x11-drm. Almost everything's running fine.
glxgears gives me ~800fps but windows in kde draw sloow... extreamly sloooow. ZZZzzz...
someone knows this problem?
system: modular X, kde compiled with CFLAGS="-Os -mtune=pentium-m -msse2 -msse -mmmx -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" and GCC 4.0.2

I think I have the same problem (on laptop Asus W5)
I have an i915gm with Modular X on KDE. I have DRI enabled and 1200 fps with glxgears but there is a big annoying slowdown.
When I click on any icon, the little expanding square takes about 2seconds to expand.
Also the videos are very slow.

But, when glxgears is running... everything runs fast again... and the videos play right.
Where on earth this may come from :?: Is glxgears activating something?

I've been having this issue ever since I installed gentoo on this laptop. Anyone else?

^marcs if you follow this topic, can you confirm the nature of your slowdowns. And especially, try doing things while glxgears is running to check if it improves the speed.

Still didn't solve it... I've tried to load everything in the xorg.conf, all extensions possible and tested at every resolution with always this same result...

Sorry to insist on this one but I've been struggling for 2 months now, and still no clue.

I get 1100 fps with glxgears but kde effects and videos (with xine) are slow. I'm almost sure the problem doesn't come from these apps since when glxgears is running all the slowdowns disappear. So it must come from either the i810 driver or the xorg.conf

upgrade to the masked version of the xorg-server, xorg-x11, xf86_driver_i810 and mesa

the default version was extremely slow for me too.... X was hugging the cpu over 45% usage at all times.
